aka: What I do for the RKBA

I talked to Congressman Bob Etheridge today during a visit he paid to my school. His meeting was concluded and chairs and etc were being rearranged, so I simply walked directly up to him and introduced myself.

I asked him his views on the AWB, and his beliefs on whether or not it will actually sunset in September.

He told me that "You don't need an Uzi for hunting."
I told him that the fully-automatic weapons most people believe the AWB protects children against are already restricted to the point of nearly no one being able to buy them, and that the AWB only addresses cosmetic features on completely legal, semi-automatic guns.
I told him that semi-automatic guns just as much as bolt action hunting rifles in the 2nd Amendment, as without them we very much may find ourselves in much the same situation as the colonists did in the 1700s with Britain.

He told me that in his opinion, the AWB will go away in September and likely will not be seen again.

We talked for a couple of minutes about hunting, as he mentioned he had seen some wild turkeys on his deer hunting lease a couple of weekends ago.

He told me that "You don't need an Uzi for hunting."
With all due respect to his office, what an idiotic statement. It shows that:
1. The guy knows nothing about the AWB, and more distressing
2. The guy doesn't respect the Bill of Rights

Seems to me like you need a new congressman.

I agree. Don't let the fact that he "talked turkey" with you cloud your judgement next time he's up for election. He may not want to disarm you, but he certainly has little interest in actively preventing others from doing so if he's that dumb about the AWB.

He told me that "You don't need an Uzi for hunting."
What his comment shows is shallow, sound bite thinking. He evidently has a better understanding of Brady's talking point fax than the constitution of the US.

In any case you need to vote that jerk out of office. Stupidity can be terminal and in his case it ought to terminate his career before he can do further damage.

Idiot!

I assume he is a Democrat?

Sounds like a hunter and nothing more.

As a fellow hunter, I can assure you defense against a tyrranical government is the main reason to own guns.

NOT ALL HUNTERS ARE LIKE THIS IDIOT POLITICIAN!

His comment ought to tell you what a "tin star" he is. He's in it for the money, fame, or glory, but has no interest in doing his appointed job.

It pisses me off to the point I can't see straight when people say, "You don't need x to hunt."

Firstly, the second amendment has nothing to do with hunting, everything to do with the security of yourself and your freedom.

Additionally, whenever anyone says, "You don't need..." They are tyrants in waiting. They don't care about freedom or the issue of need would never enter into their minds. These are dangerous people.

There is only one thing we don't have to worry about - a total firearms ban. Anything short of that is fair game for a good deal of politicians.

"You don't need an Uzi for hunting."

The only reason we don't need Uzis for hunting is that it would ruin too much meat.

The correct reply

to his "You don't need UZI's for hunting" is, You do if you are hunting politicians the day they ban guns in America.

Guys, rather than knee-jerking, you need to take opportunities like this to EDUCATE. Explain that the Uzi carbine (which is what is regulated by the AWB) is no different in function from a Browning semi-automatic rifle, the 7.62x39 round from an AK-type rifle is similar to a .30-30, etc., etc...

It is clear the offending representative had only minimal understanding of firearms in general and the technology specifically. If he did he would have not used the UZI example.

People who mindlessly mouth pre-determined talking points are not going to be impressed with technical explanations of why their position is nonsensical. Taling callibers and cartridge length and decimals dash decimals will result in a vacant, blank, thousand yard stare.

Argumentation with idiots like this one need to take place on a level that matches their mental processes. In this goober's case we are talking sound bites with pithy, high retention sayings. You will not get him to engage in a thoughtful, reasoned discussion. If he engages in a discussion you will receive a stream of Brady // VPC talking points and sound bites. You'd have better results arguing with a traffic light than engaging in an informed discussion.

I'm afraid I'll have to agree with the knee-jerkers here.

If this guy is a Congressman and thinks this way, it is too flippin' late to educate him.

Get him outta there.

It's not like he's an annoying co-worker, or a misinformed relative or neighbor.

This guy is in a position to do real and lasting damage as a lawmaker.

And he needs to go.

Yank him out of office, and then educate him. But he does not belong in Congress making laws with that kind of mindset and outlook.

I'll agree with everyone here - the Congressman needs to be promoted to the private sector. Any elected representative of the people who doesn't trust you with guns shouldn't be trusted with power. This concept is VERY lucidly developed in an essay entitled, "Why Did It Have to be Guns?" by L. Neil Smith which appears at http://lneilsmith.com/whyguns.html

Uzis for Hunting

Whether or not you need an Uzi for hunting depends entirely on what you're hunting. If you're hunting deer, maybe not, but if you're hunting murderous tyrant politicians, which is the intent and purpose of the Second Amendment, an Uzi comes in very handy.

Ethridge is a Dem

And he mouthed the same talking point used by John Kerry during senate debate. You did a great job defining what the Clinton Gun Ban actually banned and his quickly changing the subject shows he knew that you knew he did not have a clue. Great job.

"You don't need an Uzi for hunting."
Well, in one of his safari books Peter Hathaway Capstick wrote of the way he dealt with the killer baboons of Vlackfontain . . . though I believe he used a MAC rather than an UZI. ;)

Nice job WHiteknight!

This is exactly what we need to be doing. Every opportunity we get we need to confront the politicians directly. Never be affraid to approach them.

If they have to deal with complaints everywhere they go they will merely avoid the issue even if they are anti. When someone from, say NYC comes up with the next great idea they will be reluctant to join in.

Your voice counts. Especially when it is face to face.

"You don't need an Uzi for hunting."
Seems to me that the enviros are working on that, what with re-infesting large areas with wolves. With a lone brown bear you've got a chance with a .45-70; with a pack of hungry wolves, you're going to need some serious cyclic rates.

WhiteKnight...

He didn't know you from Adam, threw out the Uzi line for whatever his purpose; you came back with knowledgable material. He then knew which side of the fence you were occupying and threw out the "dead ban" statement.

1. He is on your (our) side, but didn't know where you stood...

-OR-

2. He is a hunter type but not particularly impressed with RKBA activists...

-OR-

3. He is an anti - and told you what you wanted to hear.

Since you are "on site" so to speak (he's your guy to support or not), you'll have to sort it out which of the above are reasonably close.

BTW: What's going on with the Schumer, et al AWB bill that's supposed to be working??? Anyone know?
