I understand that you want to use 'softer' ammo when shooting target guns (this is a Jim Clark long slide). I was given two boxes of ammo and the recipe. But as I don't load yet,

I'd like to know what ammo you buy to shoot guns like this???

Thank you for your assistance.

Greg

Same, my best ammo is a 200gr SWC around 800 fps.

I belive there is some Winchester "match" ammo, but I couldn't tell you how it shoots.

Federal Gold Medal Match, a 185 gr jacketed SWC at 750.
Asym National Match, a 185 gr JHP at 775 fps.
Atlanta Arms 185 gr JHP at 920 fps (they used to have this bullet at 800 fps which would be better for your gun, ask them if they still do.)

Mainly 185 gr. and 200 gr. target loads. Years ago I use to run IMI Match 185 gr. ammo through my Gold Cup with great results in terms of accuracy but haven't seen any for quite some time.

You could probably respring a Long Slide for common ammo. Wolff sells extra length springs and there are solid plugs to serve as spacers so you can use a regular spring.

If it is a Long Heavy Slide with rib, I would be very cautious about shooting, say, hardball. That rib is held on by three or four screws and there is some risk of kicking it off. A friend here sent a Heavy Slide back to Mr Giles to have the rib replaced with plain sights when he took up IPSC.

I don't. Seriously, a serious gun requires serious ammunition.

Probably as close as you're going to come is Federal 185gr. target loads, but I wouldn't even mess with that, since it's expensive and still probably not as good as what you could load yourself with some practice.

I shooting NOTHING in my Series 70 Colt wadcutter gun except my own 200gr. LSWC target loads. I use nothing but Bullseye (forget the exact load) and [when I can get them] Federal match primers.

I shot bullseye most of my life. The standard load for bullseye shooters
is 3.5 Grains of Bullseye with a 200 grain cast or swaged bullet.

The guy I got it from specifically said, if you want to shoot hardball get a different gun!

I like the idea of a target pistol and will keep it this way. Someday I may trade it for something different, but for now...

Thanks so much for the tips guys!!! Appreciate it!

I run 200 gr SWC cast bullets (polymer coated) on top of 5 gr of Unique. Not sure of the FPS, but the max load of 5.4 grains of Unique runs 790 FPS according to the Alliant load data.

200 gr swc with 4.0 gr of bullseye is accurate and "all-day" mild out of my government model.

I am a bullseye/precision pistol shooter.
My .45 is a James Clark SR. long slide build date of Nov/1968.
My go to load is Nosler 185gr JHP custom competition over 4.6-4.8 gr of bullseye.
16# recoil spring.
Very accurate at 50 and 25 yards.
Owned a chrono once, shot it twice and it still did not work :)
Factory ammo suggestion would be Atlanta Arms.
