Taurus 992 Tracker Combo 9-Shot Revolver .22LR / .22WMR

Lord, help me. I cannot get the Taurus Tracker Combo Revolver out of my mind. Changing the cylinders appears to take seconds, and with a quick reset of the the adjustable sight for elevation you can quickly switch back and forth from .22LR to .22WMR (if you want to).

I have been shooting my .22 revolvers more frequently lately (cheap, available ammo that is also easy on an old guy's wrists), usually taking one along on each range visit, but they are all single action, and the recent purchase of a Kel-Tec PMR30 (that thing is a BLAST to shoot, but it has an unhealthy appetite for the more expensive .22WMR ammo) has me thinking of a combo DA revolver.

I always wanted a S&W 617 in .22, but a Taurus combo for over $200 less is looking attractive for my casual use. I did several searches and all the THR threads I could find were several years old. Does anyone have recent or extended experience with the Taurus 992 Tracker Combo?

They must have done well since Taurus took that swap-crane system and put it on their new SHOT show gun in 357/38/9mm. I don’t have any firsthand experience with them, but I’m highly interested in the 357/9mm version.

I've personally owned the 992 in the 4" barrel version and I gotta say that I absolutely loved it. Stupidly I let it get away from me in a trade where I sold it for about $150 more than I paid for it.

Anyway, it shot great, never a light strike, very accurate, etc. The only complaint I had was that sometimes 'hot' 22 magnum loads would have some sticky extracts from the cylinder. Not real bad and this is probably something a good cylinder polishing would have helped out on, but since I had less than 100 rounds of 22 mag through it wasn't enough for me to bother with.

I'll pick one up again at some point I'm sure.

I have the 992 with 6" barrel. Nine shots and very accurate. May seem a little on the heavy side but it is a good shooter. I have not altered anything on it and have never had the first problem with it.

I have not been thrilled by the dual caliber revolvers because the bullet diameters are different. It would seem to me that shooting the smaller caliber through a larger bore or vice versa would affect accuracy. It might be a bit nitpicking but, I think that I would prefer to have a barrel designed for the slug that I’m shooting.

The difference in this case is .002 which hasn't been an issue in other designs. Even if it was, .357 bullets can always be substituted for the .355 bullets in a 9mm case if needed (assuming you reload).

I've personally owned the 22lr/22magnum combo Tracker with a 4" barrel and I gotta say that I liked it okay. I used to shoot it fairly often, and it was quite accurate. The DA trigger was stiff, but the SA trigger was pretty good, so I always shot it that way. Other than the DA trigger, it shot great, balanced well, never a light strike, etc.

Then I lucked into a 6" S&W K22 Masterpiece for a very good price. Eventually I realized I would never shoot the Taurus again and traded it towards something else.

I have a Taurus model 627 Tracker 6 1/2 inch bbl, in .357 mag, and it shoots like a dream. I've made good 30 yard shots with it at my in laws house. Matte SS looks great and the fit and finish are excellent. Wish I had the money I'd get another with the 4 inch bbl. Oh well, wish list, maybe someday.

I have a Taurus® Mdl 992B4 that I got new in Oct 2013. I can't say enough good things about this gun. It is highly accurate with both 22LR and 22 Mag ammunition. I've put several bricks of 22LR and about 500 rounds of 22 Mag through it without a malfunction of any kind. The trigger is very smooth in both DA & SA. It is my constant companion for taking grouse while deer and elk hunting in the Pacific Northwest.

Get the 992 you will not be disappointed!
