Taurus PT 22 Advice

Just bought a Taurus PT 22. Nickle finish, gold accents, and rosewood grips.
Any advice on lightening the trigger pull? Also what about ammo? I know all 22 caliber guns prefer different ammo, but what have the majority of PT 22 shooters found that works best. One last question. What about accessories? The gun looks great as is but does anyone know if any options are available for upgrades? Thanks for the advice.

They are notorious jammers. I had a pretty one like yours and tried different mags and ammo brands. Didn't help and I didn't want to get into a cycle of sending it back to Taurus. So I sold it.

Bummer - it is a nice gun. See if you have a shooter and then I won't change anything.

I have had one since the 1990s when the came out - My mother has it now. Jammed on 1st trip, sent it to Taurus, and it has worked ever since - NO jams at all. Still works.

Nothing U can do about the trigger, though. I mean, it is a pocket gun - not a real big range gun. And, w/ a DAO, that's the way it works (the trigger pull). I suppose if you ordered some hammer springs you could experiment w/ some cut springs to see how light U can get and still be reliable. But, I just got used to it.

I bought one last wed. and sent to factory on Thur. Light primes strikes Went fired no jaming just 2 or 3 trigger pulls to fire. Buy a Beretta instead.

on a small gun like that the hammer doesn't have much mass, I wouldn't do anything to lighten the spring for fear of causing light strikes, If you want a lighter pull and the same kind of gun go with the Berettas which have a single action option. I really think that chart stickied on the top of the autoloader forum is helpful in making better decisions on this type of gun.

i guess i must have the only good one they ever made. mine has never jammed,missfired, or malfunctioned in any way. its pretty accurate too for such a small pistol. yes its a long hard trigger pull, but its not a target gun, its a highly concealable self defense pistol. mine is not for sale, and it rides in my truck, along with a taurus PT945 (.45 auto). they were both cheap buys, and i trust them with my life, even though i own higher priced guns (berreta,kimber,ruger) i guess if they get stolen i've not lost as much, but to me, they are just as worthy. they go bang everytime, a defense gun requirement.

+1 on them being junk. Mine wouldn't feed more than the first round loaded into the tilting barrel. Sent it back to Taurus and it came back with more problems than when it left. Taurus guns are a crap shoot. About half the ones I've bought have worked, the rest not. And the ones that did not work Taurus didn't seem to be able to or want to fix.

I had one as well that was a jammer. It was not accurate either so I got a Beretta 21A instead. The Beretta is nice because it has the hammer that you can cock for SA shooting which is more accurate. The Beretta is not a tack driver but it can hit a pop can at 10 yards with every shot, the PT-22 might hit it once in a mag.

As far as improving the trigger, the only fast easy and cheap way would be to reduce the hammer spring but like others have noted, that may cause light hammer strikes. The gun is not worth getting trigger work done on because it would cost as much as you paid for it in the first place.

Sorry, I can't offer any good advice. Make sure the trigger and all the parts are lubed and that may improve it a little. DAO is a bear in a pistol this tiny. With a match grade SA trigger, it would be hard to hit with. With the long heavy DAO trigger that it has, it is reduced to being an arms length distance pistol. It is not reliable enough for self defense so it really has no use. Just my opinion. Good luck.

Well, overall, I was satisfied w/ the operation of mine. I just needed the $ for something else, and w/ the caliber, I didn't have much use for it. I may get a target 22 one day; something w/ a better trigger. But, I guess I was lucky to have one that worked so well.

Bought one about 10 years ago for$100. Will not feed next to last round in either factory mags. After a couple of years, slide cracked under barrel. Taurus fixed it but junk stays junk. I would sell it but I hate to stick someone with it, karma and such. Joe

I had one that jammed on me constantly with any type ammo. It was "neat" but not neat enough for me to keep. Traded it away.

I have one in nickle.

It has been flawless for 500 or so rounds now.

Pretty much any feed issues experienced with these guns are due to ammo quality, or crummy aftermarket magazines. Stick with factory mags, and CCI ammo and you should be fine. I feed mine MiniMags and Velocitors. I did have some initial problems when I first got it, but I was using cheap bulk Remington .22LR. As soon as I switched to the much higher quality stuff, the problems went away. Keep it clean and well lubricated, and it's a great little plinker.

I have noticed on the front of the mags (where the lead of the bullet lays) some ammo will come out of the mag too fast so that creates a problem. Usually the last couple of shells in the mag try to go above the barrel. Anyway of fixing this? Shells with longer caseings? Or shorter? Bend the lips in(I tried this then the shells didn't want to feed from the mag)?

In the manual it specifically says not to use Hyper Velocity ammo in the PT22's. On some other forums I've read several posts of these
guns blowing with Stingers or Velocitors. Wouldn't do it.

Hyper velocity wears the the gun where the slide and front of the frame meet. I shot a lot of yellowjackets thru the gun before I noticed it in the manual.

The factory crimped the mag lips on my gun and that made it feed reliably.

mine feeds anything i stick in it. i save CCI stingers for emergencies (thats what stays loaded in it) shoot cheap junk bulk ammo when plinking. it eats 'em all.

I just got one for my wife. Satin nickle with rosewood grips. Really nice. As I have other 22 lr mouse guns I am aware of them being picky on what you feed them. I started out with CCI Quik Shoks for her carry ammo. Nope, immediate jam. Then I tried CCI mini mags. Nope, jam again. Then I went with American Eagle HP'S , BINGO. Worked like a charm. Fed perfectly. Shot exactly. Piece of cake. I had a little over a brick in my inventory. She can have it. I didn't really want her shooting my CCI's anyway. Great gun although I wish the safety was a little tighter. The DAO trigger is just the way I want it for her. I don't want the thing going off in her carry purse unless she pulls it and drops the safety and fires it. I wouldn't lessen the trigger. It's not that bad and as for the occaisonal misfires or light primer hits that was solved also with the American Eagle ammo as well.

I wish I had one myself !

Have a PT22 for the last 6 years or so and it is working just fine.

Stay away form the hypervelocity stuff. Manual says so.

CCI Standard,Mini Mags HPs or ball ammo,and Remington Golden 22's work well through mine.

my first post. this is some general info that i hope will be helpful to someone. this is my personal experience with taurus pt 22 and pt25. nov2 08 i bought new a pt22 with the white pearl and gold trim. bought 100 rds of federal or winchester at wlmrt cheap. when i began shooting the gun would not feed a full clip in the first 50 rds.. then next 50 3 ftf i was p..... off then i remembered break in so i went and bought 300 rds cci mini mags hp and solid. no problems at all since then another 2oords again flawless. bought pt 25 3 days ago bought 50rd ammo flawless from the get go. yesterday i bought another pt22 w blk pearl and gld new. i only shot it 9 times yesterday perfect,but today i will put 5oo rds thru it for fun and further reliability test.

I hope you enjoy them. I had one. Not too reliable, and basically useless to me. I replaced it with a P32 and a Buckmark, two very useful and fun guns.

My PT22 runs like a champ with anything I feed it. Pretty darn accurate, too...

I have a plain old blued model. It feeds CCI Mini-Mags without fail. It was picky for about 100 rounds.

My Beretta Model 21, on the other hand, has been a POS, with jamming, FTF, and the barrel tip-up joint loosening markedly in under 300 rounds. Rather than send it back to Beretta, and have them return it in worse shape than it went out, I simply destroyed it.
