Taurus PT111 Millenium 9mm Problems

I own a pt111 and have had it for a little under 2 years. I have taken it apart before to clean it and the slide kept getting stuck when I took it apart and put it back together, but somehow I managed to get it back to its correct state. Well, I decided to clean it again, and I had problems getting the slide off, but it eventually came off. When I went to put it back together, I inserted the pin, released the slide catch, and the slide only partially went forward. It seems like the slide is getting stuck on something. I tried to disassemble it, but the slide is completely stuck. Does anybody have any tips before I resort to taking it to a gunsmith? I'm really frustrated :banghead: with this gun because it has such a great feel, but maintenance on it sucks.

You are removing the magazine first, right?

Can you get the takedown pin out? have you tried pulling the trigger while removing the slide? They are tricky buggers to take down.

This happens to me frequently. You have to disassemble it, then reassemble it paying careful attention to the placement of the slide stop pin into the groove under the chamber. The barrel has to be seated all the way back in the frame before you push the slide stop home.

Is any of this making sense? If not, I'll try to post some pictures to better illustrate what I'm describing.

Common problem for new auto owners

It sometimes helps to hold the pistol up to some light and look through the slide stop hole to align the barrel correctly. Eventually you will get a feel for it.

I think I know what your problem is. - Now if I can just describe it....

Somehow on the PT-111s the feedramp gets caught behind a pin I believe. If this is the case you'll notice that your barrel is sitting back too far. This has happened to me a few times. I just "play" with the gun.. keeping the slide pulled slightly back to take the pressure off it and shake the gun. Eventually the feed ramp makes it over the pin and all is well.

I have tried to push it back manually but never been sucessful. I know it sounds strange but shaking it has worked every time. - Not very scientific though.

Suggestion for future: When you reassemble the gun next time press and hold down the top of the chamber as you put the slide on. This will keep the barrel from slipping over that pin.

This happened to me before I ever shot the PT-111 and has happened 3 or 4 times since when I forget to hold down the barrel when I put the slide back on. You don't have to get rough with it... just shake it around with the pressure off.

read the manual very, very carefully.....

you'll see that the problem of the slide getting stuck on dissassembly is specifically addresseed....

If the slide sticks on the frame, be sure the chamber is empty and firmly pull the trigger fully to the rear while pulling the slide forward off the frame.

If the slide does not move because the barrel remains to the rear and tilted upward, be sure the chamber is empty and push the muzzle against the palm of one hand while pushing the slide forward with the other.

The barrel upon reassembly is also specifically addressed in the manual....

The slide may stick on the frame before going fully to the rear, or the barrel may ride with it to the rear. Begin again and press down with the finger onto that rear portion of the barrel accessible through the ejection port. When the barrel depresses and locks to the frame, continue moving the slide fully to the rear and engage the slide catch lever.

I've found the easiest way to break the 111 down is to
Pull the slide back and lock it.
Turn the pin to the down position
Release the slide forward very slightly, then pull it back and lock it.
This will make the pin pop out, you can then remove it.
Pointing the gun at the floor, pull the trigger and allow the slide to move forward off the frame.
When putting the slide back on, keep the gun pointing to the floor.
Pull back the slide and lock it, still pointing it down.
This alligns the barrel and slide so that you can insert the pin.
It's not uncommon to have to work the trigger will removing and installing the slide. Just the nature of the beast.
