Taurus Ultralite .38 special revolver problem

I purchased a Taurus Ultralite .38 special 5-shot revolver a year ago. I'm having problems with the gun and can't seem to find the cause of these issues. Sometimes, the gun seems to missfire one of the bullets, and just recently it has been locking up to where I can't pull the trigger or the hammer back, or swing the cylinder out. After working with it for a few minutes, it eventually lets me swing the cylinder out.

I noticed that one of the chambers seemed to drag on the barrel because of what appeared to be access paint on the cylinder. I sanded down the access paint and successfully cycled through five empty cartridges. I put five bullets in and it did the same thing again....except this time it fired all five bullets and then locked up.

Could this be a problem from the heat of the bullet when it is fired?

Any help with this issue will be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my wife's Charter Arms Pink Lady .38 revolver. I sent it back to Charter for repair. I suggest you contact Taurus.

It seems like a common problem on Taurus revolvers. Suggest you send it back to Miami to get it fixed.

I had two M85 revolvers that did this. Send it to Taurus and they will fix the problem under their lifetime warranty. I've not had any malfuntions since the repair work was done.

Problem fixed

After further inspecting the gun, I noticed that one of the chambers was rubbing on the barrel, causing it to missfire and lock up after firing. This was all caused by access paint on the gun. I sanded down the back of the barrel and the cylinder with some light sand paper and apparently the problem is now fixed. I was able to fire 10-15 rounds in a row with no problem what so ever and the gun did not lock up when dry firing the fired cartridges.

Whoever had the job of painting the gun at the factory, since it is not a blue finish, put a thick coating of paint on the gun barrel and cylinder. The cylinder was not perfectly machined and it appears that they over painted that part of the gun in order to try to hide the mess-up.

But in looking at Taurus Ultralights on the website?
I ain't seeing no dang paint except on the discontinued Titanium model!
Maybe they had a problem!

Looks almost exactly like the one in the second address link, except with different grips.

Anyway, the problem seems to be fixed now. Apparently the warranty has passed according to the form that came with it. It says that it was a limited warranty. As long as it works, I don't see any need in putting more money in the gun.

A limited warranty does not mean it has a time limit.

It only means the warranty doesn't cover intentional damage, like sanding the paint off and adjusting the barrel / cylinder gap with sandpaper for instance.

It does mean it covers all manufacturing defects.

But if you're happy, everybody's happy!

Myself, I wouldn't be happy at all if I bought a new gun that needed the finish sanded off to get it to work!!

I think you mean "excess paint".. and, as has been said, Taurus revolvers are not painted by Taurus.
Anyway, glad you got it fixed. Certainly don't need any more unhappy Taurus owners; got enough of 'em as it is. I have two Taurus guns (one revolver made in 1987 and one semi-auto made in 1998) and I have been pleased with them both. Also had a .22 Taurus revolver back in the nineties, which performed well. Let my about-to-be ex-wife keep it when we split up.
