At certain times I carry a steel frame model 85. It's a very good little revolver. Don't much care for the lock but it's there and never caused a problem.

Intrigued by why you are asking, since it appears you like both of the Taurus guns you own...

I'll give you my thoughts...

If you look over the posts about Taurus products on this and other forums you will find a wide range of opinions both positive and negative, with lots of horror stories. To me, that type of a response, in part, answers the question. Taurus is known to have QC issues. I've seen these QC issues in a number of Taurus products I've handled over the years. I've also seen very good examples of their products.

For myself, I personally would not depend on one willingly to protect myself with and prefer to carry more reliable brands. I would however purchase one if there was a model that appealed to me for use as a fun gun.

Not sure I answered your question, but hope that helps...

I have a M85UL in the gun queue. It will be the discrete carry piece when I am hiking on crowded trails.

I own a 605 Stainless which I carried for 10 years and shot the finish off of out playing and competing with my shooting buddies. It has never failed in all of those thousands of rounds. My son's model 85 has developed a hitch which I believe I have solved. That remains to be seen when he shoots it next. Two weeks from now.

I usually carry my first gen. PT145 Millenium or my stainless 605. Occasionally, my 450 UL in 45 Colt. After some more range time and fired rounds, I might rotate my PT1911 into the mix. Yes, I own quite a few Taurus handguns. No, I have never had any problems with them. Yes, I like them very much, and will continue to buy them. Oh yeah, I also own Smiths, Rugers, a Colt, a Berreta, and a Rossi. It just seems that the Taurus are what I end up carrying.

As the shop was closing up today I did a deal for a 2" Stainless 44 Special. Have to back tomorrow to get it because the owner had to be someplace right after closing and didn't have time to do the paperwork.

After I check it out and test fire it it may become my new daily driver.

I carry an M85UL 2" stainless. I bent the center pin trying to execute a wrist-flip cowboy reload like an idiot... but other than that, it's worked fine.

Also, don't dry-fire your M85 without snap caps. ;)

A well written and informative, fairly represented reply. I might add QC improved dramatically since 2008. The most widely seen negative was a video where someones' barrel blew off.(no injuries, the airbag deployed) Then again, more well established pistols, made in the USA have had the same maladies. Of course on the bright side, as you whizz your barrel past his left ear, assuming your that close, which statistics show defense shootings are, the perp will have facial burns, from the barrel blast plus retina burn, and a startled look on his face! Unless of course if he doesn't end up with a barrel nose. Ya gotta laugh, gives new meaning to the term "pistol whipped"!!! Glad you weren't intimate..... HAGD> the above said in jest. Laughter is the best medicine.

I have eleven Taurus® revolvers.............
• Mdl 85B2CH 38 Special - 1994
• Mdl 669SS4CP 357 Magnum - 1996
• Mdl 85B2 38 Special - 1997
• Mdl 617SS2 357 Magnum - 2003
• Mdl 605SS3 357 Magnum - 2006
• Mdl 85SS2UL 38 Special - 2007
• Mdl 605SS2 357 Magnum - 2010
• Mdl 605SS2 357 Magnum - 2012
• Mdl 425SS2 41 Magnum - 2012
• Mdl 85SS2UL 38 Special - 2012
• Mdl 992B4 22LR/22Magnum - 2013

All have performed superbly and I continue to shoot them all almost every week.

I have only encountered these problems.........
• Mdl 85B2CH broke a firing pin (part# 19) after 11,000+ rounds. I replaced the firing pin & it's still going strong.
• Mdl 85SS2UL had the cylinder stop (part# 44) wear down after 10,000 rounds. Called Taurus® and they shipped the part right away. Installed new cylinder stop and now the gun works fine.

Anytime I had to send a gun in they fixed and returned it when they said they would. Specifically.....................
• Mdl 617 developed excessive cylinder to forcing cone gap (.011") after almost 6,000 rounds. I sent it to Taurus® and they replaced the cylinder (part# 8) and adjusted the yoke (part# 9) *I've since put 3,000+ rounds through it and it's still going strong.
• Mdl 605SS2 Locked up after 5,500+ rounds. Sent the gun in and Taurus said the problem was not repairable. Taurus® in turn, sent me a new gun.

I will not hesitate to buy additional Taurus® revolvers.
They are an outstanding value.

My go to carry guns for many years have been steel Taurus Model 85s. One has the exposed hammer and the other has the bobbed version. Both pre-date the lock/"safety" that some of you mentioned.

I carry an 85 ultralight with the hammer spur removed. I also have a very nice 4" SS model 689 which I keep loaded for HD. If you get a good one, it will serve you well. The two I mentioned are replacements for an 85 and a 66 which were stolen in a burglary. I also have S&W, Colt, Ruger, Beretta, etc. I have a rotation of CC pieces, only one of which is a Taurus. But the 689 is my go-to HD piece. If I get a 4" 357 I like better that might change, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've owned a number of Taurus Revolvers over the years. Most of which I seldom fired. Not through any fault of the guns, but only because I'd see some other "bright, shiny thing" and trade or sell the Taurus, but they all seemed like good, dependable guns that I didn't shoot any worse than any other gun I've ever owned. A couple of them, a Model 66, a 65, and a 431, IIRC the numbers I'd have put up against any Smith & Wesson for fit, finish, and function. I'm really sorry I sold those three.

The one that I did shoot a lot was the first one, a Model 82, I think it was, a "copy" of the S&W Model 10 HB. The ONLY fault I found with that gun was the grips looked like they'd been cut from a 2x4, by someone using a hatchet. Ugly grips. Functional, but ugly.

But that gun shot 38 wadcutters like there was no tomorrow. I didn't reload in those days, and one of the local shops sold "factory remanufactured" 38 wadcutters for about $2.00 a box, so they were pretty cheap. I shot up I don't know how many.but that Taurus worked fine.

Also I never had any trouble selling the ones I did sell. Always got my asking price which was usually what I'd paid for them.

I used to. As my handle suggests I started my handgun career with a model 617. That is the snub nose .357 with a ported barrel and 7 shot cylinder. It was a great gun while I had it. I ended up wanting a different carry gun and sold it. I later picked up a Taurus 85 and had it for a while because I needed a smaller type gun. It did great as well. I only had one Taurus break on me and that was one of their Millennium Pro's, the PT-145. That broke my confidence in their guns for defense and I never looked back. I have no problem with them as a company and am even catching myself eyeing their revolvers again.

I had a Rossi 5 shot 44mag snub of recent manufacturer.

Trigger was heavy, but fairly smooth. Had some play in the cylinder, but it didn't seem to cause any issues. Accuracy was ok, I shot it with light LSWC loads about as well as a smaller alloy J frame with standard power 38's.

It ended up moving down the road to make room for something else, it was an alright pistol but nothing amazing.

I much prefer my Smith's, but the Tauri are perfectly serviceable .

My hunting rifle is a Rossi 92 in 44mag, and it has been outstanding in every regard other than the quality of the wood and it's fitment.

I bought a Stainless 85 this year and have put about 250 rounds thru it. No problems, accurate, I think it's a good looking gun. Mine came with rubber grips and I ordered wood grips from Taurus, feels much better n the hand now. I carry it just about every day with no issues.

I "think" I still own a Taurus.
It went back to the factory June 3rd (for the 3rd time) because of a major malfunction.
I haven't seen it since.

Although I did talk to a CS supervisor about 2 weeks ago.
She told me the gun was going to be replaced, when she gets a new one.
But she couldn't tell me when that'll be.

Murphy's Law says it'll probably be Jan or Feb.
In the middle of winter, so I can't test it til the snow stops flying (April or May) .:cuss:
