Tell me about the 35 Remington

I have a Marlin 336CS in .35 and worked it into quite the tack driver. I highly recommend using Hornady FTX bullets in a tubular magazine if you start loading. I learned to handload on .35 and it is very easy because it has such a large case mouth. I don't have my book in front of me for the recipe but I have gotten group sizes down to 1/5" at 100 shooting from a backpack rest.

Every deer I shot with my 336 marlin has dropped on the spot. I've only used Remington cor-loks in mine, mostly that's all I could fine til hornaday came out with their leverevolutions. I haven't tried them yet. still have brand new box. Soon...

I know that the Kansas City Cabela's had a few Remington 81s about a month ago. I'd like one eventually, but I'll probably wait until they get more expensive.

Remington Model 8 in .35 restored with new springs and shot a cougar with it in the early 90s.
Remington 141 , super trim little gun that while only 3 MOA accurate is just so light and slick, never shot big game with it tho just a couple running yotes, it has a Pachy Low swing and a 2.5 scope on it. I just can't bring my self to sell it.
Marlin 336 from the early 70s with Lyman tang sight; a 2 moa gun but it is very clean and I have not hunted it, but I like it !
AH maybe my favorite central California short range (200 yards and under) Blaster; my cherry Remington 600 .35 (rare) which is a true sub MOA gun. I load 200 grain Barnes all copper triple shocks in it to keep the calif fruits happy. But it is a good load anyway and I have to put red paint on the case heads of the load I use because it gets very close to 2200fps out of the stubby 18" barrel of the 600 and I don't want that load in my other guns! Leupold 1-4x in warne quick release mounts:

I love the .35 Remington and in a strong bolt gun like the Rem 600 it becomes a very effcient small case . I used to shoot the Speer 180 out of it at 2400 fps from a 18" barrel! Not that the old 200 Corelokt factory load wasn't a good killer to 200 yards tho, and it was 1MOA accurate in the 600.

I'm not about to "bad mouth" the .30/30

But, it's popularity and performance compared to other cartridges has nothing to do with it's popularity.

It's the rifles it's been chambered in, notably the Winchester M94, their relative cost compared to say a bolt-actioned .30/06, and handy-ness which is hard to quantify.
The lever action rifles until lately have been better "values", were reliable repeaters (as contrasted to some semi-autos) and the lever-actions have become synonymous with "DEER RIFLE"...
that's why the .30/30 is more popular....

I've killed about the same number of deer with the .30/30 as .35. The .35 is the more effective cartridge... no contest. But, the .30/30 is no "slouch" as I was led to believe by the "gun scribes" of the '60's and early '70's.
It was by "shooting deer" and seeing thousands of hunters annually "bringing home the venison" that I saw through the "hype" of the "marketing efforts" of the gun magazines.

And, shooting rifles and shotguns "left handed", I vastly prefer the lever-action to all others.
Both my .30/30's are "lever-actions"
Both my .35's are "lever-actions"...

But, neither the .30/30 nor .35's quite match the .338ME.... but that's another thread for another day.

I've never shot a .35 Rem ($2 per round). In my research I learned that it was ballistically similar to the .30-30 (around $1 per round)... which is quite similar to the very economical 7.62x39 (about .35 cents per round). See where I'm going with this??

I have a couple .30-30 rifles. I figured I'd sell the .35 Remington, thinking it would sell quickly. I read a lot of threads with people craving more of this... a big following. I posted the ammo, and it sat. And sat. And sat. And sat some more. I bumped that posting for weeks or months, thinking I may never sell it for a reasonable price.

Finally had an offer from a guy literally 3000 miles away on the East Coast!!! So, of course, I sold the ammo...

Unless I just really HAD to have a .35 Remington lever gun, I'd pick something else... Bet you can find something ballistically similar or superior for less $...

When it comes to lead I have not had any luck with the 357 mag lead bullets. I have had to find them sized to 358.5 and .359 otherwise they shoot like its bouncing down the barrel, but then again mine is a 1954 model with ballard rifling, not the microgroove type.

While SAAMI specs for .35 Rem groove diameter is .357, the 'bullet' spec is .359"...

Not really...

I can't process comparing a 150gr .310" bullet from a 7.62x39 at 2,100fps to a 220gr .358" bullet from a .35 Rem at 2,000fps (current Hodgdon online data)...

~500 ft/#'s difference between the two at the muzzle...

TKO for the two are 13 vs. 22 respectively...

The hole thru the local Russian Boar is bigger from a .35 REmington with 200 grain Coreloktd factory ammo. The .35 Remington case seems to be amazingly accurate with a bolt gun for those in the know who reload for it, and the recoil is like a 20 guage shot gun for that big punch within 200 yards.

I used to have a 336c in .35 rem. I can't say enough good things about the round. I started another thread on how I think a modern analogue to the model 8 would be an awesome gun that one-up any semi-auto chambered in 7.62x39mm. It'll never happen, but it's a fun idea.

That said, when I get back into guns, I'll go with a .30-30 levergun over a .35. That's just because I'm not sure how long I'll be stuck in California and if I do end up hunting here, I need something for which lead free ammo is an option. There are currently no lead free bullets that will work well in a .35 Rem.
