Texas ‘Open carry' proposal advances

The House Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety wants to take the concealed part out of concealed handgun licenses.

The committee voted 5-3 in favor of a bill that would remove the word concealed from the law that allows Texans to have a handgun license. The so-called "open carry" law would allow license holders to carry their weapons in plain view wherever they would be allowed to carry a concealed handgun. The rules for getting a license would not change.

The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.

So what? This isn't about you; it's about having a choice we haven't had for more than 100 years.

They need to eliminate the need to get a "license" to carry alltogether.

If you can legally buy a handgun, you should be able to legally carry without having to jump through legal hoops and pay the extorsion fees to the state.

Have you read some of the "disqualifiers" for a CHL?
Defauted student loans.
Delinquent child support.
Delinquent taxes.

Those are the ones that have absolutely nothing to do with being able to BUY a handgun.

The parts about being a felon, domestic abuse, etc, I can agree with wholeheartedly.

I will Not pay some third party to run me through some class with a bunch of folks I know nothing about, doing their version of "Quick Draw McGraw".
And then send more money to the state so they can send me a little plastic card that says I can enjoy my Rights, as guaranteed by the second amendment of The Constitution of The United States of America.

Texas allows vehicular carry.
I keep one under my seat, I just don't carry on my person.

We need to contact out state senators and congress persons to try and advance this issue. I'm all for it.

Unfortunately, several months ago, Rick Perry stated he would veto any such bill that came to him for a signature.

Grumpy66, those dis qualifiers you mention stink, but the person to whom it applies have no one other than themselves to blame for them. I don't feel sorry for them. I am almost 68 years old, Viet Nam veteran and have paid my bills in a timely manner for over 50 years. They should too.

TexasBill, while I agree with you about your statement, I think it could have been worded a little softer. While I feel strongly about this open carry bill, if someone disagrees with it, then that's their opinion. I respect it.

Bottom line, lets all get behind this bill and get it passed.

I have no sympathy for people that WON'T pay their bills, however, sometimes bad things happen to good people.
Layoffs, downsizing, divorce, so on.

Sometimes there is just too much month at the end of the money.BTDT.

What I'm trying to get at, is WHY do those things have to affect your right to defend yourself???

If Rick Perry wants to be known as pro gun he better think long and hard before he vetoes this. He would be losing my vote for sure. I probably wouldn't even open carry but we should have the right.

Right on joeq. I probably woulodn't open carry either. Maybe back & forth for hunting to/from the range etc. But this law would give me the option. Don't have that now.

The only problem with open carry is that someone could unholster your gun and use it against you or others. It happens to cops so just imagine how it will end up if concealed carriers start hip toting.

Don't mean to double post but have a quick question. Are all forms of diagnosed mental illness considered disqualifies for a ccl or even purchasing a gun? I am bipolar type 2 but I should still be able to defend myself and I'm not about to shoot someone offhand, and if I wanted to hurt myself I wouldn't need a gun to do that.

Just once I'd like to see a thread started that even in passing mentions open carry without someone jumping in about how they prefer concealed and how awful open carry is, or a concealed carry thread without someone jumping in to say how much they prefer open.

If you don't like open carry don't post in the threads. If you prefer open to concealed, don't post in concealed threads.

And since this is Activism and there doesn't seem to be a plan of action, this one is closed.

Please post again if there is some specific action that pro gun folks can take.
