Texas to soon allow open carry. Maybe.

An Open Carry bill (as well as a campus carry bill) are introduced almost every year in the Texas state legislature, but go nowhere.
Actually, that is every other year, as the Texas Legislature only meets biennially.

Dewhurst has been reported as "in the bag" for Joe Strauss. Joe Strauss was recently re-elected as Speaker of the House. Joe Strauss is at best a "moderate" and, more realistically, a RINO. (Do some research on how he was elected Speaker the first time--it was a coalition of all the Dems and a couple "Moderate" Republicans. He has open disdain for Tea Party members and (big "C") Conservatives. As a result, I predict that yet again, nothing gets done on:

--Campus Carry
--Open Carry
--Illegal Immigration
...or any items of interest to real Conservatives.

what's so great about OC ? I fail to see the benefits... people freak out, gun grabbers are encouraged and the bad guy knows EXACTLY who has a gun and who hasn't.

even more : if you do not have the commitment and make the effort to properly conceal and carry a gun... maybe you shouldn't be carrying at all? this is not Tombstone where you put the biggest gun you can find onto your belt holster...

The only good thing about OC is that "printing" is not an issue. But even in WA State when hiking most people try to conceal their guns somewhat... every time you have OC you have some dude walking a long a busy highway with his gun in plain visibility and filming it for youtube... just to wait for cops stopping him :scrutiny:

Sorry I disagree LEO' s carry all the time even in plain clothes and the public doesn't' freak out. We need OC and better public education. I had a clueless sheep try to tell me we find' t have CCW in TX. 3 minutes and using their I- Phone they read it for themselves and became even more scared. So let them cry or move to NY.

In the city. firearms are pretty taboo, and open carry would cause a panic to be honest.
But in small towns that I've vited and anywhere in the Texas Hill country were guns are a part of life, no one has a problem with them.

Maybe I oughtta move back to Kerrville.........
Doesn't seem to be a problem here in Tucson, or in Phoenix or Salt Lake.

Hmmmm....

Yeah, Constitutional Rights should only be exercised covertly, or you aren't responsible.

Wow. Seriously?

This doesn't seem to be a problem in Utah or Arizona. Maybe people living there are smarter then people elsewhere?

Being concerned with OC's [ where legal ] is a sign of the chilling effect.

To me, it is equal to being afraid of being seen walking into a voting booth.

Imagine if the police were called each time someone of color 'dared' to use a water fountain.

wel.. OC makes it incredibly hard to the police to spot the danger...

let's say a guy gets a call that his car is being towed and runs thru a shopping mall with a gun on his belt ... now expect the same scenario with a CCW holder... what's less scary and would trigger less 9-11 calls?

youtube is full of videos with OC dudes walking next to a busy highway and just waiting for being stopped and questioned by the cops. the fact is: IF the police gets a call that a "weird looking" guy with a gun is walking next to the highway... they HAVE to investigate. I'd much rather seem then focus on real crime instead of being forced to follow thru on OC calls.

Or how about the guy in Utah doing his mall shopping with an AR15 on his shoulders?

Only because you have the right to do something, doesn't mean you actually should do it.

I for example am not a huge fan of gay pride parades with dudes kissing in public wearing leather / latex clothes on. Do they have the right to do it? sure. Is it smart/appropriate? questionable. Same way I feel about guys going grocery shopping with an AR15 over their shoulder or going to the movies with a 1911 visibly on your body....

Are you also in favor of being charged with a crime if your shirt flies up in the wind and reveals your CCW?

Let's let LEGAL be separate from PRUDENT. One is a matter of punishment, the other of wisdom. Thanks for not adding the possibility of jail time just because you don't think something is prudent.

I OC almost all the time and have never seen anyone freak out. I don't exactly live out in the wilderness. The only people who have said anything about it have been either supportive or curious. Never had the cops called to my knowledge, but have been around some at various places. I think the fears are overblown.

SimplyChad we can do that now...

<snip> from out CHL laws.

Sec. 46.15.
(b) Section 46.02 does not apply to a person who:
(4) is engaging in lawful hunting, fishing, or other sporting activity on the immediate premises where the activity is conducted, or is en route between the premises and the actor's residence, if the weapon is a type commonly used in the activity;

Oh I hope this one passes. Not so much because I want to open carry, but because I don't want to worry about it being 100% concealed 100% of the time..

It's my understanding you don't have to worry about printing any more. I thought they relaxed the restrictions a couple years ago.

But it is still very dependent on where you live. I live in a town where police officers take any possible occasion to call for back up because they need a reason to turn on their sirens... Someone takes two turns to pull over instead of one during a traffic stop? 3 police cars will be behind them and chances are they will be ordered out of the car. Heck, I was walking back from school one day and had 2 cops come up behind me because I was "acting suspicious".... I was walking with my head down because I was reading a book....
