Mine would be my 5" GP100 .357, love the GP100 and to me the 5" barrel is the sweet spot.

I would prefer a Model 27 4”, but a 586 or my Model 19 would be just fine. I currently choose the Model 19 4” since that is what I have.

S&W Mod. 28-2. 28k rounds thru her, no failures. Tight as a bank vault. Will print 3” groups at 50 yards off sandbags. The trigger is “ I think let off, she barks”.

I think a 2 3/4" or 3" Speed Six 357 which has fixed sights and round butt would be pretty close to the 3" fixed sight 681 you mentioned.

4" GP 100 for me, I have and have shot more than a few .357s, my kids are gonna inherit the GP100 when i shuffle on, cuz I am not gonna sell it. I picked it up for $500 and I would be surprised if it saw more than a box or two of ammo before I got it, it was that clean.

I could not find a solo pic or her, but here she is nestled among friends.

The SAA clone to the top left is a .357 also

I love my .38 LCRx carried it as my primary for several years, but as I have gotten older, it is not so much fun at the range. I would shoot a box of .38 158 grain standard loads (not even +p ammo), followed by 5 +Ps and I knew I had been shooting it and I don't consider myself to be recoil sensitive. I don't think I would want to shoot too many full power .357s from a similar revolver to my .38 lcrx.

I have an LCR in .22 mag, and LCRx in .38 so I am a fan of them.
    medium.jpg

Now, maybe the .357 and the .38 LCRX are different, (they look about the same to me) but my hat is off to you if you are practicing religiously with an LCRx in .357 that is the same or similar to my .38.

I think if I were gonna go smaller in .357 than the GP100, I would pick the SP101 with the 3" barrel.

I like the K-frame model 19 before they had to make it idiot proof and clumsy in the 686. Mine is a pinned and recessed, nickel plated 19-4 with 4" barrel. I will say that it only gets moderate level reloads with 158 bullets and has never fired 38 Special. It carries well in an OWB hi-ride, forward cant.

Either the 4.2” or 6” GP-100. They are built like tanks and are super accurate. They’re just no-nonsense guns.

This is a tough one. It comes down to a Ruger Blackhawk, 7.5" barrel or a 6" GP100. Both are overbuilt, accurate and utterly reliable. Probably go with the Blackhawk because it's a slightly simpler mechanism so less to go wrong. (I hope.)

For a double action I like the balance of the Ruger Security-Six with 6" barrel better than the GP but the GP100 is a bit beefier which fits better with the OP's specs.

I agree. I carried one as my State of NJ issued sidearm for years.
After I left the cops, my wife asked me what gun I'd like for Christmas.,I told her a M-66 4". Well the guy in the gun store talked her into the 686 4"...pre lock. No dash. Marriage is often such a compromise.

The original post engenders a whole series of potential scenarios. Of what I have, a 4" Stainless Security Six seems the best choice. The imagination sends me in a quest for 6" 686 or Gp100 that I don't have.....but the original post is well crafted to let us imagine all sorts of scenarios. When I consider which 357 mag I ACTUALLY do go to for "rough use" it is a 2" LCR.

The OP could have qualified that it should be a gun in which we actually shoot .357 Magnum.

If I intended it to carry for daily use, it would be this S&W model 66 41BDA918-B44F-4067-BD60-94744E08C1E1.jpeg

The 19/66 with 2.5” barrel carries well but doesn’t handle 357 Magnum in a way that I like. I really think 4” is best for carry, shooting and good terminal ballistics.

If I was to venture into the woods, depending on what wildlife is in the area, I'd want as long a barrel as I could reasonably carry and handle. 6" or 8" barrel, any reliable major brand would do IMHO. The longer barrel will bump your velocity and the longer sight radius does add a bit of speed an accuracy when you get out past face to face pistol distances for me anyway.
