Nothing has happened or anything like that but, I can't rest easy with my current system of securing my firearms. I have all of my guns in a metal cabinet with a keyed lock. My G19 rest in a gunvault due to it being my carry gun. I don't have a huge collection by any stretch of the imagination but after tallying a total of 5775.00 worth of guns in this house, it is time to do better than a 100.00 metal cabinet. My wife and I are going to try to go down to the metroplex tomarrow for a day out and a stop by Academy Sports may be in the plan. They have the American Eagle gun safes by Cannon with a group-2 mechanical lock for 587.47. I'll have to stop by my in-laws to get their trailer to haul it back on. I looked at the Winchester gun safes at Sams club but am skeptical about the electronic lock. My G19 will be my quick access gun and will remain in the gunvault for social functions. I also like Cannon's warranty. They pay for everything from in house repairs to include shipping to and from the factory in the event that the safe needs replacing. That's something that isn't included in the warranty plan for the Winchester gun safes.

Make sure the combination lock has what they call a "day lock" that's a key for the combination lock, if you are in and out of the safe, say you are cleaning some of your guns, you can key lock the safe, keep it secure, but open in an instant to put one up and get another out. The day lock isn't as secure as the combination, but it will stop someone who might be curious, like a kid in the house, so use the combination the majority of the time, day lock only when it's needed. Any quality gun safe with a dial combination should have a day lock.

My dad just bought a Fort Knox safe not too long ago, and its about the nicest safe I have seen. His was awfully pricey, but I guess it makes sense to guard the collection with the best you can afford.

What city are you in? I'd recommend Lone Star gun safe company if you are in the Houston area. They deliver, literally, and they've moved my safe twice since I bought mine.

One suggestion:

Get a safe that's bigger than you think you need. MUCH bigger.

You'll be surprised how quickly if fills up.

Also, if you're married, be prepared. The first day it is there, your wife WILL find all kinds of neat stuff that just HAS to go into the safe. If you get a big one, you can dedicate a corner to her stuff right off the bat, and have room for the rest.

Also, invest in some pistol racks. They'll come in rather handy.

Looks like I'm going to have to go with the Zannotti modular safe as I can't get a big enough "normal" safe into my basement due to the crazy way our steps are built.
