Wesson Smith, welcome to the club from a fellow Ohioan. I take it you like wheel guns too? Congrats on your XLR.

LAST DAY of NC deer season, a couple hours ago... got a nice big doe at 5:20pm. About 90 yards, light fading... a good shot right behind shoulder, shooting my 336 with 4x scope. Load was Federal Power-shok 150gr. Deer went about four yards and dropped.

30-30 will do the job just fine.

for the record, i dont own one, but i do love them. i dont know if that means i have to leave the club or not. money just hasnt appeared for me to spend on one.

I count 212.

Beat out the model 39 guys by a solid margin
.

Who cares, some of us are in two or more of the "Marlin clubs".

Personally I have 39a, 336's, 1894, and 1895's and like them all, after all they are all Marlin leveractions!!

Sean, absolutely not. You are very welcome here.

Ownership is not a requirement here, just an interest. (Like we could have "requirements" for belonging to a THR thread anyway, other than being a THR member and following their rules. The "club" idea is just a concept to have fun with while sharing ideas.)

As for money being short, dude, I can so relate. I'm dirt broke right now, and that's preventing me from adding not only two more long guns and a revolver, but a reloading set up. But we can always dream.

Participate in the discussions here all you want. That goes for everyone, owner or not. That's why we're here: to talk about 336's. :)

Well I finally picked up my first lever gun, a 336 of course.

Now, who has the best deals on ammo for these things? Should I purchase locally at Wal-Mart, or should I order online somewhere? I don't have a problem dropping a couple hundred on ammo to buy a lot of 500, 1000, etc.

Let me know, thanks!!

I don't have a problem dropping a couple hundred on ammo to buy a lot of 500, 1000, etc.
Just so you know, .30-30 ammo costs me about $1.00/round locally right now.
I -think- Cabelas still has it for about $70/100 ($0.70/round) but with shipping I suspect it'd still wind up close to $1.00/round.

I thought it was cheaper than that. Hmmm....

I do have a cabela's retail shop close to me. Maybe that's where I should start looking.

I haven't been shopping for .30-30 ammo in awhile, and didn't know it was that high. I was accustomed to about $0.70/round and maybe even $0.60 if I caught a good sale, but this was about 5 years ago.

I know prices can vary regionally, and I know prices have risen considerably since then. So everything above goes out the window as meaningless. I bet it's still cheaper than most anything this side of 7.62x39, though.

Around here retailers usually have sales on ammo in the fall. I reload but I picked up a few boxes of the Federal (sale price of under $10/box) and Remington (~$10 /box). Couple that with a $5/box rebate (limit two/per mfr) and I spent less than $25 for 80 rounds including tax!

Last I looked Walmart had Remington 170g Corelokt ammo for ~$12.50/box

I don't typically buy commercial ammo but 30-30 is the exception. When its on sale its cheap and shoots almost as well as my reloads.

You can reload 30-30 with a high quality bullet for 25-40 cents a shot. If you shoot cast bullets you can get it down to ~10-20 cents/ round.

JustsayMo- I've spent a bit of time tonight working on reloading components for 30-30. I'm gonna go that route.

Been hoarding the brass for a while, planning on buying this gun.

TFin I hear you bro.

Luckily 30-30 good brass is easy to come by and usually free. Powders like IMR 3031 get over 200 charges per pound, Quality bullets from Hornady, Speer and Sierra typically run less than 20 cents each and primers can still be found for less than 3 cents each. Once you find "the load" you can stock up and produce great ammo for less than half of commercial stuff.

I'm still dialing in loads for my latest Marlins---Good problem :p Keep us informed as to your progress.

Will do. I think the gun may be coming apart as a winter project soon, but I'll be stocking up on supplies for reloading as I go.

I bought the Montgomery Wards edition one, the 740 EM. It's getting a complete makeover. Before and after pics to follow.

WallyWorld in my area (central NC) has Federal Power-Shok 30-30 for under $10/box, in both 150- and 170gr variety - it has been that price all season. That is what I used this year, in 150gr, and it was deadly on the deer. Blows right through both sides, with a bigger entrance wound than exit. All but one dropped and DRT, with one buck - hit through lungs, a little far back - covering about 100yds. Should have shot him better, but he was on the run.

I paid $12.99 for a box of Remington 170g CorLokt about 2 weeks ago at Wal-Mart in Belmont, NC. Normally I use my reloads which cost me around $.10 per round with lead bullets and re-using the brass. If you include the brass the price is around $.40 per round.

I recently bought a marlin 336 xlr in 30-30. I love this gun it is the most natural handling gun i have ever felt. I would trust my life in any situation with this gun

I'm a member

Here is a deer that I took in Georgia this year. This is with my 336 in 30-30 with a federal 150 grain at 160 yards through the neck. The first shot was a bit further (closer to 180 actually stepped off in a field) up and took off one of the antlers at the base. Fortunately it was only a 3 pointer and we found the antler. Optics is a Pentax 1.5-6x scope, which I HIGHLY like. It balances well, clear, accurate, and lets in the light.
