Thanks Nem!

Several times a night, as I roll over, I put my hand on that grip. It's always there.

Funny how that muscle memory thing works.

I have been working on our master bedroom for the last week. The wife's been sleeping with our 7-year old and I've been taking residence on our comfy leather couch.

I've been placing my Taurus PT-92 AF loaded with 15+1 rounds of Speer 124 GR. GDHP's on the coffee table between my laptop and maglight. Of course each night the gun is in a little bit different spot. I've noticed that if I just do a couple of after-lying-down placement checks that I can close my eyes and securely grab the 9 each and every time without fail.

That helps me sleep well.

My wife taught me another use for the Mika holster. She absconded my 296, sort of a 642 on steroids, holster for the 2" 10 I gave her as a car gun. This was a response to a friend at work, also a UAB student, who faced carjackers on the way home a few weeks ago and fought - the police said that saved his life. He received four gunshot wounds - neck, arm, stomach, and thigh - and should recover fully. He was very lucky, much more so than a young lady near UAB earlier this week - she died - with the BMW convertible still in gear. My wife is a great shot - has beaten me at several events this year.

Anyway, she used Velcro strips to hold my 296's holster to the center console, out of view from the side windows, but an easy 'drop' of her hand from the stick shift of her 'hotrod'. The 10 is locked away when she is at work, where she is not to have a firearm even in the parking area. Of course, after the carjack incident, I would imagine that the majority of folks have something in their cars... this is Alabama!

I tried to talk her into a 442/642 in an IWB for 'carry'... she wants a Seecamp .32 for her pocket. We tried her brother's KelTec .32 - it had major ftf issues on new Rem 60gr MC - and my public range RO experience with them mirrored that - not very security-inspiring. The Seecamp will cost ~$25 more than a new S&W - and may just aggravate a real attacker. That's my mad-gun-money for the rest of the year plus... I'd rather get a new S&W - and another 'free' gun bag.

My spare Mika 642 holster may get Velcro-ed to the back of the nightstand, for quick sleep-time deployment.

Your wife may be interested in the Kel Tec P3AT instead of the .32 caliber Seacamp. P3AT's run about $275-$300. I've had one for several years now and after a short break-in period where I had a few FTE's, it's been 100% reliable. I now carry my M&P 340 in pocket, but until I got the M&P out of layaway (90 days), I carried the P3AT. My wife carries the 642 in her purse, but if she pocket carried I believe she would like the P3AT. She shoots both of them pretty well.

I still tote the P3AT with me while bike riding because it just goes out of sight in my back jersey pocket. I put it in a plastic sandwich baggie to keep the sweat off the metal, but the plastic is so thin that my trigger finger can easily push through the plastic for emergency use.

Hey jt,
What brand of holster is that in the pic? I like the shape and also that it is black and not brown like most out there.

Also what is that in the bottom of the pic and what is it used for if it is not too obvious?

Thanks,
e'trode

Thanks for the welcome jt1 and Phydeaux642. I have been looking through the thread and am up to post 2550. Man, ~2200 to go. Thanks to all of the great posts, I have learned a lot about the 642 and can't wait to get my hands on one. I am hoping to put my money down next weekend.

I am still curious where the non-reloaders buy ammo? Do you get it at your local wally world, or do you order online? I have been shooting a 9mm bottomfeeder, and have always bought my ammo at wally world (~$16 for 100 WWB). It looks like .38 special ammo is going to be a lot more expensive than 9mm, so I am looking for the best deal.

Say "Hello" to My Little Friend...

This S&W 442 is my latest purchase. I went in to my LGS not long ago and it followed me home.:D I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet (been shooting the 642). I did change the grips on it, though. There is just something about about the wood grips that I find very appealing. As soon as I get my T-grip for my 642 (found some old S&W wood grips for it, also), I will post a photo.

S.O.D. - I've been shooting some Fiocchi lately for practice that I get at a local gun/pawn shop. I've been paying about $11.00 for a box of 50. That's more than I pay for 9mm, but it's not bad.

JT,

Excellent job on the petition, the page displaying it, and getting the word out in other threads.

One question: I noticed that both name and email are required.

I understand that we can use screen name, but what about email addy?

Will it be displayed? [Checking the "signature" page, it looks like not.]
Do you know who will have access to our email addresses?
(I get enough spam already without publicly displaying mine,
and not entirely sure I want to be added to another corporate mailing list.)

Thnx.

Nem - When I posted I elected the option to mask all data execpt name and comments. As I understand it only I (and you can trust me :scrutiny::evil::scrutiny:) have access and the mods on the petition site. I researched this site before I used it and found no reports of any problems. You may try a null address and see if it works. Hopefully we will have no problems. When I signed I got the following email:

RE: Monogrip

If I may innocently inquire, why ask Hogue to change the Monogrip when they already make the Bantam? In other words what specifically are y'all seeking to improve over the Bantam with a shorter Monogrip?

ugaarguy - As you know the Bantam has no cushion on the frame backstrap as does the Monogrip. Basically we are asking for a shorter Monogrip or a Bantam with a backstrap cushion.

Uga,

JT nailed it.

That backstrap cushion
makes a big diff on a mule.

Think of the difference between
a stiff 3/4 ton with padded seats v w/o.

Ah, I see. Here though are the problems I see.

For those unfamiliar,The Bantam is held on the gun by pressure and aligned by the grip locater pin, making the open backstrap necessary so it can be pried open for removal. The Monogrip is held on the by the gun by a screw on the bottom which screws into a metal stirrup; the stirrup itself slips over the bottom of the frame, and hangs on the grip locater pin, thus providing both a mounting and locating base for the grip. Therefore the Monogrip must extend below the gripframe.

Perhaps Hogue could make either a shorter Monogrip, or an enclosed backstrap Bantam, either of which would use a screw running width wise to be tightened holding the grip on by pressure as in traditional handgun stocks. The issue Hogue may have with this is that it runs counter to the identity of their stocks; the gripping surfaces of which are completely completely seamless and uninterrupted.

Perhaps a hybrid Pachmayr would work? Their Compac Pro extends just slightly below the gripframe, but is an open backstrap design. The Compac is a closed backstrap design, but it extends to provide a grip surface for the pinky on S&W J and Colt D frames. The nice thing is that these already use a cross screw to mount to the gun, so theoretically one could just cut the bottom off of a Compac and something close to what you folks seek.

I think I'll see if we have a spare set of used D or J frame Compacs in the grip bins at work tomorrow. If we do I've got an experiment to try. If this experiment works perhaps we J frame fans should petition Pachmayr to make such a grip as well.

Heck, a closed backstrap short length Decelerator grip would probably make .38 Airweights a breeze to shoot, and at least make the .357 Mag AirLites tolerable. Maybe a little competition between the two companies would make things interesting.

Signed petition. Just thinking, but I'd guess Hogue gets more of my money in accessories than any other company, and it's all in grips. The pretty, pretty wood. Pricey, but oh so pretty. Just look at Phydeaux's new 442, the wood contrasts the black so well.

Crossing fingers for the new club grip!

Crimson Trace ? LG-305 or LG-405

I know there is somebody on here with twins of these. I finally got my license. Massachusetts made me wait extra long. I am looking to purchase my first gun as soon as funds are available. I will be getting a 642 (of course) and definitely want the laser grips. I will be carrying everday (concealed in this state) I intend to carry IWB front, possibly smartcarry.

Smith & Wesson comes from the factory with the LG-305's but I think I want the smaller grips which are the LG-405's. Question: Should I get the package that S&W offers of a 642 w/305's and save myself a little money or should I order the 642 and have LG-405's put on for a little more money? I guess I asking...is there a big difference in size for concealment? Are there any other differences? I am 147 lbs. and 5'8". Smaller is better for me.
Thanks,
familyman2

familyman2: About the CT grips--I have aftermarket 305s on a 640, and aftermarket 405s on a M&P340.

Other than the size issue, keep in mind that the S&W 642/305 factory package has an S&W logo rather than Crimson Trace. That might be a factor in the revolver having an increased resale value down the road.

However, as you identified, the 405 has a smaller grip, and the 'recoil pocket' on the grip. The 305 has a longer grip--I'm bigger than you, and I found I acclimated to the 640 / 305 package faster because of more room for all my fingers.

Having said that, I will say that for carry I definitely prefer the 405, even though the M&P340 takes more acclimation time with the shorter grip--and that would be true with any lightweight j-frame. FWIW, I've had trouble with the recoil pocket tearing out on my 405, but no one else seems to have had this trouble, and CT has serviced me promptly, so it is not an issue to consider. (I suspect part of the problem may even be my gripping style, which is changing as I learn more--see Jerry Miculek's tips for revolver hand grips.

You can get the aftermarket grips for about $215.00 plus shipping--check Ultimate Outdoors or Impact Guns; I bought from both.

Hope this info helps.

The Twins

The difference in grip between the two is a two finger grip with the pinkie folded under or a three finger grip. I comfortably pocket carry either one in jeans or most other pants, Nemisis holster, no problem. The smaller grip of the 405 is not bad, and will hide better in smaller areas. They are not only shorter, but also thinner. The 305 is substantially a better (stronger) grip, but not necessarily needed, especially for deep concealment. I like them both, for different reasons. The main thing is, you know you want one. Good decision. You won't regret it.
