Crypt of dan wesson? sorry but that went over my head hahahaha..

the finish is factory perfect right now so i guess i should leave it alone untill it gets roughed up, if it ever gets rough enough then i can blast it.. there is a pic here somewhere of exactly what im thinking about let me try and find it.

^ Agree, K'Hill, that's a beauty. I really like the soft finish.

So, I agree about bead blasting for beauty.
Going to have my 65 beaded.

But then, I don't like shiny guns.

When I'm at camp and hear something crackle just outside camp,
I prefer for my revolvers to not sparkle brightly in the moon light. :uhoh:

PS by edit: What I'd really like is a black 686 (or 65).

Hey guys...1st post here, I was doing some poking around and ran across this 686 thread. I've got a Lew Horton 2 1/2" 686+ and I love it. I just talked to the folks over at Ahrends grips and I've got a set of Retro Combat grips in Goncalo Alves coming for it, should be here in a few weeks.

Until then, here she is...

I'll join! I currently have a 2 1/2" 686-6. I've owned a 681 and a couple of 586's,4" & 6" and a couple of 686's 4" & 6" over the years. Being a broke Paratrooper raising a family,I couldn't hang on to them. Now that there grown,I'm starting my collection over again.

Man, no one has posted here in a while! I'm bringing this thread back to life. I just placed my order for a S&W 686P 6" 7 shot revolver.

I also just purchased a Bianchi 5BHL holster and a nice set of Hogue Rosewood Grips.

I'll post pics when it comes.

Keep this thread alive!

Congratulations. Great revolver. I've got the 4", 7-shot. It's sweet.

Welcome to the club.

Hello everyone....been a while since I've visited...been thinking of adding a 2.5" 686+ to go with the 4"...I'm leaning however toward the 640.

Westy Nice pics. :)

I picked up this "Gem" from a good friend, 686-3 (I won't even mention the price). It appears to be about 95/100%, I took it to the range and it is a shooter, great gun. msn

Just got a 686 SSR! Fantastic revolver - great ergonamic, out-of-the-box trigger and excellent fit and finsh. I'm a happy camper! Dennis

Got this for $300

I call it "stinkbutt," on account of the Hogue grips were so inundated with the rancid perfume of the prior owner, that I had to take them off, and double bag them to keep them from making me gag when I was in the same room with it. I wouldn't have thought it possible, but I'm here to tell you its true.

It wears a clean set of Pachmyr's now.
Still looking for someplace to bury the Hogues where the EPA won't write me up.

386 Night Guard?

do any of you 686 owners own or have any experience with the 386 Night Guard? i really like the concept of it.. 7 shot, night sight, fixed rear, .357 capable, light weight, short 2.5 inch barrel. it would be carried occasionally with my 442 and also serve home defense duties. my house is tight so i really like the short barrel for greater mobility. any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

My first handgun purchase was a 686, back around 1987. I purchased it new for $289. I ended up selling it a gunshow and regret that transaction ever since. I finally picked up another one last year (used) at a gunshow, and only paid $375. It's just as sweet a shoot as my original one was. I'd love to get a pair of the wooden presentation grips for it,though. I really don't care for the grips S&W puts on them now. Just doesn't ergonomically do it for me.

I had a 6" 686. Traded it....for a 4". I prefer the balance of the 4" gun. Of course that's just my preference.

The 4" was used (it was an even swap) but apparently had trigger work done by Novaks. Oh, that trigger is sweet! It so light in single action that you barely feel any pressure on your finger. And very smooth in DA. I have a couple of other older Smiths (19, 629) and none of their triggers are this nice.

I will use my 4" 686-3 for Stock Service Revolver IDPA at our next qualifier. I put the Hogue Monogrip on it - the Dash 3 still came with the wooden hand rasps. Pretty, yes, but for drawing and reloading, not good.

The three Safariland Comp 3 speedloaders and single and double Blade-tech pouches cost over $100, but, hey, I'm guaranteed to place 3rd every time - there are only two other IDPA SSR Revolver shooters in the group!
