This year I've seen more bear then I have the last 10 years, I'm seeing about one a week during the day. Seen 3 the other day coming home at night.

The early bear season starts this Saturday here in the southern zone in New York, think the northern zone starts the week after.

me and my buddy have been building a small hunting blind on his small piece of land, we planted a small food plot in the field and cleared some old trails around the area.

he went out today to check some trail cams and right in front of are blind was a small bear, looks about 150 lb to me but I don't know bear well.

I hope to get out next week and see if I can get one, I've never shot a bear I came very close a few years ago tho.

now I have to decide what to use, I need to check and sight in a few rifles.

my take the 6.5 prc out of just my 7x57, tho the little cz 7.62x39 will be great in the small blind.

If I get one is like to render the fat down, make some patch line for my muzzleloader and bear grease is handy to have around.

Like to keep the skin, don't know to keep the feet and head on or just the middle. Let it salt and see about tanning it.

In are game book there's a ad for a guy paying 27/oz for gallbladder.

I suppose bear fat can be rendered into soap.

They should probably outlaw the bear gall bladder trade before bears go the way of the rhinoceros

I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of this sir!

Good for you, man. I’m trying to get my first bear this year too, but I’m having to pay thousands of dollars and cross the eastern seaboard to do it. Having them find you instead of looking for them was definitely the wiser way to go about it.

There population must be growing here, I've never seen one in the woods when hunting until recently. I always thought how do these guys around here shoot one every season with out baiting, well I think they were. We had a nice little 8-10 point around a few weeks ago, hard to count the point Jim being in velvet and a weird nontipical.

He needs some radishes to eat. Gotta put meat on them bones. And yes he has a lot of potential.
I think the food plot we planted has some in it, there 3 or 4 things mixed in i believe.we were worried he maybe sick of got hit by a car since it looks like the right side antlers are odd. Looking at other deer around we can't see ribs and most are a real pretty reddish color now, this guy looks darker.

We will pass him up this year, unless we see him have any problems. Tho we can't control someone else shooting him.

We planted under 1/4 acer of plot I think next year we will do the hole field for them.

The deer around here are nice and fat. A buck ran right towards me a few weeks back less than a block from the house. I was on the motorcycle. He turned when I revved. Loud exhausts are good. Bear are making their way more south. Just outside Utica there are a few hanging around these days. To the North there seems to be a few moose that head south as well. Good luck with the bear. I will take my 45-70 hunting when I get out of house arrest. My NYS punishment for going on a work trip to Nevada. I got the cross bow out today. Can't find where I put the target bolts. Wanted to practice. Eight more days to freedom.

Ya most deer near are far to, I hope this guy is ok or we maybe better culling him. Bear just seem everywhere this year, even seen a few cross the highway.

I may take my 45/70, it has been the first for a few animals I've shot. I got some ammo loaded, i haven't shot my yet but this gun seems to group everything about the same. Only about a 50 yard shot in the small field anyways.

My 45-70 always seems to keep its zero. I have a 4x shotgun scope mounted on top. Works well.
I got that custom Siamese mauser, I just have old style Remington sights on it no scope. I think I have some 300 and 350 loaded up, I like the 400s better but even the 300 are plenty. Hope your quarantine goes quick any we all are successful this season.

Ya it would be nice to get a bear since I've never shot one, like to try bear meat to.
Bear meat can be very good, but be sure to treat it as real meat immediately. The black hide and high fat content can turn the meat quickly. Gut it soon, cool it and keep it clean. We normally cook it like pot roast, and it is very difficult to tell the difference with beef. Bear burger is very good.
