probably a used one......maybe I'd be pleasantly surprised, but I think you would be hard pressed to find a quality new one for that price.

Got my Marlin 336CS for $225 and it came with a cheap scope (which I immediately replaced).
The rifle was used but in great shape.
I have to go with "Used".

A used 336 is right.
WELL, used for under 300.00 is the way to go. Two weapons i would look into are a winchester model 94 and a marlin 336. The marlin is a heavier weapon but the mechanism is more durable. The Winchester much lighter and easier to clean. Not really a down side to either one but i would stay away from the newer safety models and stick with one around 1970 to 1990. I carry a Marlin in 30-30 and one in 44 mag. I like both manufacturers but prefer Marlin have owned both and have had no issues with either. (Keep in mind the Winchesters are getting harder and harder to find).

I have a Marlin 336 and a Winchester 94.... I am trying to decide which one to keep, so this thread is of great interest to me...
I am leaning towards keeping the 94 simply because it was my dads gun and I used it as a kid... I bought the 336 before he gave me his....
Not to hijack your thread, as hopefully this is of the OP's concern as well, but what do you think a good asking price for these two guns is on a used market in good working order? (a few cosmetic scratches and whatnot, but not bad)

You can always get another 336. They're everywhere.
Your Dad's gun? You ain't findin' that in any pawnshop. Hearing your Dad's voice every time you hold that rifle in your hands is something that cannot be purchased, for any price.
Never sell your Dad's gun. Ever.

RoostRider, If you dispose of that rifle, other than to pass forward to another family member, you WILL be haunted forever.
Now, back to the original purpose of this thread...When someone is looking for a sub-$300 levergun, I have 3 words...."Previously Owned Marlin". Nothing wrong with Winchester's levergun offerings; I prefer Marlins.

My dad has a '94 w/ octagon barrel. I killed my first two elk with that rifle and it ain't making its way out of this family noway/nohow.

I picked this up in August for $200 +tax at a local pawn shop...
Near as I can tell, it's a 1981 model (ser # 19xxx...) in really good condition. The bore is outstanding. Other than a few minor scuffs and scratches... I love it...

OK.... so I tend to agree with you guys about the 94....
The reality of the situation is that I have a lot of guns in my cabinet and plenty of them from the old man.... I gave one to my brother (long story, but the folks wouldn't give it to him, so I did when they gave it to me... with their permission), but other than that I have 4 more guns from him and other predecessors (grandpa and grandmas).... this 94 was just a gun he bought so I could deer hunt back in the day... its not some heirloom yet.... but it does have some sentimental value, and I do want to have a nice 30-30 around, so it makes sense to keep it instead of this Marlin I just bought somewhere (can't even remember where) to bear hunt with...
I have no real desire for 2 30-30's, and I would like to fund the purchase of a new CCW .... it all adds up to selling this gun.... maybe the OP is interested?.... lol....

The new mossberg retails for $350 around here. I know, not under $300 but pretty close.
