The best Rifle/Pistol combo of the same caliber?

Ruger 10/22 and Mark II.

Otherwise, Rifle calibers shot out of pistols are weak. And pistol calibers shot out of rifles are still....just slightly faster pistol calibers.

I've shot the BFR in 45-70. It was disappointing. Nothing even as harsh as a .44 mag. You need barrel length for that cartridge. Now....the .454 Casull......it was all that and a bag of chips.......but hits nothing like a decent rifle........

Doesn't Marlin make an M1895 in .454 casull? ;)

For the 'reach out and touch 'em' crowd, how about these:

Glock or 1911 with their respective carbine conversion kits

While I'd like to get a CCU / Carbine Conversion Unit once I get my 1911, it strikes me as the least desireble of your listed options simply because it involves disabling half of your combo to make the other half work instead of simply being able to transition from one to the other.

If whatever situation you see yourself needing this particular combination for does not require the ability to move from one weapon to the other without delay, the CCU seems a good way to save money and packing space.

My personal choices are:
S&W 686 / Marlin 1894C in .357/.38
Ruger P89 / PC9 in 9mm (same mags)
Ruger P94 / PC4 in .40 S&W (again, same mags)
Glock 17 / K-T SUB-2000 in 9mm (once again, same mags)
S&W Model 59 / K-T SUB 2000 in 9mm (still again, same mags)
Beretta 92 / CX-4 in 9mm (and again, same mags)
2 x M-1911's (one outfitted with CCU conversion) (yet again, same mags)

Notice the trend with using the same mags?

S&W PC 66 F-comp and a Cimarron 1873 trapper in 357. Great combo smooth actions on both guns. Accurate enough withing the range of the ammo.

I could run the 357, 41, or 44 combo. Any of them will do. But if I'm not chasing something double my weight with teeth and claws, I'd run the 357 combo for the ammo weight/bulk factor.

Out of my rifle a 158 grain slug will run over 2100 fps. Tell me that isn't as good as a 150gr 30-30 load.

For a SHTF situation I would go with a Marlin 1894 in .357mag with a Ruger GP-100 in stainless.

For any other situation it would be a Marlin 1894 in.44mag with a 3" bbl. SW model 29.

Well geez!No one has mentioned that Hi-Point makes a nifty little carbine & pistol in both 9mm & 40 s&w.
Not saying that it would be my 1st choice....

But I felt that SOMEONE had to say it.:D

Rossi Win92 clone and Ruger Blackhawk (or S&W 629 Mountain Gun or Taurus 450) in .45 Colt.

Similar choices in .357 (although I'd choose a 4" Python) would be a close second.

1911 and a Marlin Camp Carbine in 45 ACP would be choice #3.

Witness paired with an MP5 in 10mm would be choice for #4.

I'm surprised by the number of people who would take a lever action and a revolver. I figured the auto pistols with carbines that take the same magazine would be the most prominent.

I would have been surprised by that also three years ago...that's when I started shooting cowboy action. I didn't realize the firepower a good man/woman behind a single action and lever action could create.

As an example, my cowboy action club sponsored a charity shoot against local cops. They with their duty weapons (semi autos all) against us with our "ancient" single actions and 100-year old long guns.

....we smoked 'em :D

My UZI and whatever 9mm

and

Marlin 45 Camp Carbine and whatever 45ACP 1911.

Thompson and whatever 45ACP pistol.

Winchester 9422 XTR and whatever 22 pistol.

No, no, no. :banghead:

Don't you know a legitimate reason to buy another gun when it's right in front of you? :neener:

I've always been interested in that CCU, never have tried one.

I have a Win '94 and Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt.

Lots of other good suggestions.

Would love to have the Thompson 1911 combo.

How about a AR conversion for 45acp to go with the 1911?

If it had to serve all purposes:
  • S&W Model 29 revolver (mine has an 8 3/8" barrel)
  • Marlin 1894

Just as a fun combo, if I could keep my Ruger P90 and/or a 12 gauge for defense
  • Ruger Mk. II Target
  • Ruger 77/22

Any rifle that is really capable of 'reaching out' past 100 yards really can't fire a round that you would want to handhold. The 44 Magnum combo is perfect. You can load target 44 Special rounds, or full-house magnums for huntin in the rifle.

Would a pistol-caliber carbine hold its own in a SHTF scenario? And what's out there in .40S&W? I know of the Kel-Tec, Hi-Point, and Ruger, but not much else...

For practicality/SHTF-- None of em. A decent rifle round should not fit in a practically sized pistol.

For fun/ range- the first that come to mind are:

MP5N and M9

MP5/10 and 10mm 1911

Thompson and 1911

UMP 45 and MK23

Storm & M9

10/22 and Neos

Out of all those, I'd probably pick the 1st or 2nd as "best". None of them have the range that I would want from a rifle though.
