Thanks for the reminder. I actually had a chance to visit the Alamo this year. I found it amusing that the museum/grounds don’t receive any federal money.

A historic day indead...

Col. Travis is an "uncle" of mine. My great grandma (Dad side) was a Travis, and were are descended from one of the late hero's siblings. I hope to make it to San Antonio de Bejar one day to see the Alamo. Col Travis was a great man, and despite his many flaws, certainly displayed the highest level of gallantry, honor and personal courage during the seige.

Victory or Death!

I was stationed in San Antonio in 1964 and visited the Alamo.
A inspiring place never to be forgotten.
Thank you for the reminder of the anniversary.

And don't forget to Remember the Maine! Just as important as remembering the Alamo.

Take cover from what? You're absolutely right. Those who say we aren't being invaded by illegals forget what happened when the roles were reversed...

FWIW, I hold a PhD in History. My areas are Mexican History and US/Mexican relations. :)

I know I'm right, but pointing out inconvenient details about history can get some people rather upset. :)

Feud,

Only those who are intellectually dishonest get upset about the truth. There are a few of us with you on this one.

It's somewhat important to remember that the Alamo was a Spanish mission, after all.

I had a chance to go the the Alamo last year, and I thought it was awesome. The historical documents such as letters written to and from family members from soldiers stationed there, plus the oratory in the court yard was enlightening to say the least.

I flew to TX with my handgun and it was nice that there was no 30.06 sign at the Alamo so I could carry in there.

Lived in San Antonio for 10 years. The Alamo was a cool place to visit then off to Tony Roma's for ribs and beer...

Feud, Most of the people who died there were legally in Texas and you know it. At least 1/3 or so of them were of Mexican decent.

What would you do if you moved to a place thinking you had basic rights in a republic and a dictator took over and set aside the constitution?

However, that is one reason I don't like the talk about English only as there were plenty of Spanish speaking people in Texas when it became a nation and then a state.

Oh well, stupid argument on a thread about brave men who died for what they believed in.

Did you learn your Texas History from the same people who say "Guns are Bad"?

Please tell us, what do you really know about the events that led up to the Alamo? Enquiring minds want to know.

Not to be on the other side of things but;

Travis left his wife and kids (divorced them) to seek fame and money in Texas

Bowie was not what you would call an "upright" guy either. Made money in the slave trade

Crocket was drumed out of U S senate with the words "you can go to hell and I am going to Texas" also looking for more fame and money.

Yeah they died to the man but not for the U S A they died mainly trying to be in on the ground level of the start of a new country. They was in fact mostly running from debt wives and on some counts the law.

I am not saying they was not brave or I am not saying they was not heros but they was all this for their own not for the greater good of any one else.

I stand ready for the insults that will surely fly my way

Fellow citizens and compatriots;
I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna. I have sustained a continual Bombardment and cannonade for 24 hours and have not lost a man. The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken. I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, and our flag still waves proudly from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch. The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily and will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country. Victory or Death.

William Barret Travis
Lt. Col. Comdt.

P.S. The Lord is on our side. When the enemy appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn. We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bushels and got into the walls 20 or 30 head of Beeves.

Travis

Travis was only 27 years old when he died.

Eh, most "revolutionaries" are hardly squeaky clean individuals.

It takes a bit of rough edge to write a Declaration of Independance, sign it, and bleed for it.

I don't think anyone has the illusion that these guys were saints in what they did up to the Revolution, only that they entered that state BECAUSE of it.

None of that is a secret. It just isn't taught widely in the children's textbooks. :)
I am sure if you looked, you would find that lots of heroes of our past were not perfect.

You forgot to say that Sam Houston was a lazy kid who ran away from the farm to go live with Cherokees and came to Texas after a fight with a Congressman. Of course he is the only guy to be governor of two different states as well.

ARKIESTEEL,

So...you don't think much of Travis, Bowie or Crocket. What's your point?

It is taking all my will power to stay out of this insipid revisionist drivel about what was and continues to be (arguably) the most defining and heroic event in our nation's storied history.

Those of you who believe this please send a check to the DRT. They have just announced a $60 million renovation campaign for the sacred grounds and the US government does not fund it. They have too many other significant entitlements to worry about
