Has anyone chosen the Glock 21 as their designated or primary home defense handgun? If so, what was your reasoning...reliability, durability, price, capacity?

I have been seeing a lot of police trade ins at great prices and I'm tempted to pick one up just to have in the house.

I alternate between my G20, G21, and G17, probably using the G17 more than the others as a nightstand piece. I also have my G26 nearby, ALWAYS. In my opinion, the G21 and G17 are superior to the G20 for home.

I have. My reasoning was all of the above, with reliability being the most important.
The only modification that I consider necessary is the replacement of the stock sights with tritium sights in a configuration that suits you.

Even though some people believe that a .45 bounce off the T shirt of a bad guy, I, think you will find it to be an effective round. The use of a Glock is purely up to you. I, prefer a 1911.
Just for the recorded the bedside gun is a G17, and an 870, and also an AR15, all backed up buy an angry Pekineses.

Don't see why not. I use my 29SF with $40 combat light from Walmart as general purpose gun. The Chinese light is brighter then my overpriced and over-rated XL300.

I have several Glocks. The G-21, with night sights is the designated HD pistol that is within reach. The G-20 is the hiking gun, the G-19's and G-26 are smaller and for carry.

I don't have a G21 anymore but the G21 and the G20 are two of my favorite full size Glocks. I the the G21 is great for HD.

I keep my USP 45 near me plus my G30SF. But I think the G21 is great especially I you have a light attached to it.

My only complaint with the regular G21 is the size of the grip, If you're comfortable with it great, me I need an SF or Gen 4 model. I used a 21SF for a bedside gun for several years before switching to a 9mm Glock. My reason for change was ammo cost, I can shoot a whole lot more 9mm for the same ammo budget. I use/used the same Streamlight M3 on both and was/am equally comfortable with either loaded with quality defensive ammo. My 21 was sold as I didn't see the need for both a 9mm & .45 for the same job and I elected to consolidate to two guns in 9mm.

My 21 is my bump in the night pistol. I bought it used as a poluce trade in and it already had the night sights on it, so it was a no-brainer. Good magazine size, good caliber, easy manual of arms when woken from a stupor, gives me the warm and fuzzies.

It's what sleeps next to me. Another upside to the G21 is it's simplicity. When something goes bump in the night the last thing you want to have to do is find a safety to click off.

I'm considering it. I owned a G21SF ambi. Great gun. I have a G17 now for HD and range blaster, but would prefer the G21sf or Gen4 G21 for HD and I already have the extra mags and the G30 to go with it. I shoot the G21/30 better than 9mm Glocks. Many who make the switch (down) to 9mm do so due to primarily ammo cost, and the other reasonings IMO try to minimalize that. 13+1 of 230gr .45acp goodness is very nice.

I have a Gen 4 21... I use it as an HD option because I like .45, and can fit 14 rounds in the mag with a +1 base plate, and still get unending reliability. The thing's got about 2500 rounds through it by now, and has never hiccuped.
