Just in time to use as a stocking stuffer, the incredible WW2 flick "The Great Raid" is out on DVD. This is a fantastic war film (the Ranger rescue of US soldiers held in the Philippeans), especially if you are tired of the preachy, sentimental crap that weighs down a lot of other new "war" movies. It is almost documentary in style and supposedly very faithful to the true events, though they did confabulate a love story to tie in a female character (the woman was real, her relationship with a male character was not, so I understand). But it is a side plot to the movie.

Anyway, anyone who loves the old classics should enjoy this one. It didn't do too well at the theaters, which is probably why they are making the widescreen dvd a "collectors edition" for $30. But it comes with a book about the Cabanatuan rescue (Breuers "Great Raid on Cabanatuan", though oddly enough Sides [who wrote the complementary book "Ghost Soldiers"] is on the DVD commentary) and is supposedly an extended directors cut, even through the 131-133 minute run time (sources differ) is essentailly identical to the 132 min theatrical run time (off of IMDB).
