1911 guy:
Our laws are becoming more numerous and more ridiculously verbose. With that combination, they have also become more selectively enforced. The very opposite of the purpose of having laws.

I agree. The Constitution contains 7,591 words including the 27 amendments, and as such, has served to guide this nation for over two-hundred years. That said, NO law, whether federal or state, should even be considered if it contains more words than the Constitution!

I'm at a loss as to what this proposed law will accomplish given the FACT that the ATF and DOJ do not currently prosecute persons lying on Form 4473.

There was a study done in 2010 and delivered to the DOJ in 2012 that studied Form 4473 enforcement and prosecution. The DOJ prosecuted 44 out of 72,000 Form 4473 violations.

That's 0.00061% - I think that may be an illustration of the phrase, "miniscule amount."

So, the new law will somehow result in a dramatic reduction in straw purchases because the penalty is larger and not the "chance" the DOJ will prosecute has gotten greater?

Please...let's just start enforcing the current laws instead of supporting some fantasy that a "new law" will help - it won't because it won't be enforced anymore than the current laws.

More of anything Governing is not the Answer.

Let me see if I've got this right. It is already illegal to make a straw purchase. Yet the legislators figure we need another law against it.

I know this is sort of out of left field but, why don't we just enforce the laws we have. Give only maximum sentences and have the convicted do every last second of their sentence.

I know, I know, that would probably work and if it did the legislators wouldn't be able to defend their full time status and massive staffs. Silly of me to even think they'd do something that worked and move away from the feed trough.

Will this stop the Attorney General from selling guns to Mexican drug cartels?

No, they sell guns to whoever they want. They don't need back ground checks, receipts for the tax dollars they used to purchase the guns or an accounting of any money they received from the buyers. For all we know the ATF agents who were involved may be living on that money. That sort of thing happens when the DOJ and the adm thumbs it's nose at congress and withholds evidence in an investigation. Eric Holder didn't win the high honor of being the only AG to be held in contempt of congress in the history of the US for no good reason.

Hold the DOJ accountable before any new laws are passed for the general public.

A new poll released today(relative to the Republican debate on Wednesday night) shows that more voting Americans are now putting a priority on Gun Control than on Immigration and Abortion. There was no clarification if it was more or less control or just more enforcement of the laws already on the books.

Whale Actually,
Their Background is why they get those guns.

Case in Point;

If they actually prosecuted straw purchases, and if they were able to demonstrate a recidivism rate which suggested that 10 years was not enough, then this would make sense.

In reality, even people who get caught with ILLEGAL MACHINE GUNS (yes, gunS, as in plural) often only serve the few days between arrest and arraignment, pay some fines and spend a few years on probation.

This strikes me as nothing more than a feeble attempt by the Democrats to placate their anti-gun constituents for awhile.
