The Guns of Firefly?

Man, I just ordered the DVD's to see what all the hype's about. You guys are killin' me.

I just do not get it

I watched three or four episodes before I grew sick of the sloppy, disjointed storyline and quit. A couple of the episodes were OK standing on their own but either they changed writers for each episode or they were all smoking crack. I personally enjoy a degree of continuity between one episode and the next. How this thing EVER got made into a movie is beyond me.

The entire series was a lament to the supplantation of literature by television shows.

The episodes on TV were that way because FOX aired them out of order and refused to air the original one-hour pilot, so the "pilot" episode, "The Train Job" had to squeeze in all the exposition and change a couple of characters (making Mal more cheerful and upbeat, for instance.)

If you borrow or buy the DVD set, you can watch the episodes in order. They make perfect sense that way and the story arcs stretch across the entire season (and would have been several seasons long if they'd been given the chance to make several seasons.)

Watching the series on DVD IS a totally different experience
than watching the series when it aired. Fox could do a
documentary on How to Destroy a Perfectly Good Series
(show the episodes out of sequence, pre-empt for sports
shows, pick the worst time slot for the audience, don't
even target an audience, etc).

Interesting note on the Lemat: I wondered how the central
muzzleloaded shot charge would stay intact after the
nine .42 revolver chambers had fired and generated nine
instances of recoil. Firing the shot charge first would be the
tactical equivalent of opening a gunfight with a flashbang.

On the Firefly episode "Trash" the laser raygun prototype
was called the Lassiter. They should have named it the
Ronald.

This would explain HEAPS about the frustrating TV series that actually made it through the television set and into my visual cortex. Why the heck would a network... never mind. Juggled episodes? I can sort of see the series making a little sense in that context. Maybe I WILL have to see the movie after all.

When was Mal cheerful and upbeat?

Beg, buy, or borrow the DVDs of the original series. Then watch all of the episodes in their proper order. It does make sense, and it's a GREAT story.

I'll bet that once you start you'll be hooked. Nobody I know has been able to resist.

I'll say it again. Firefly is one of the best programs of all time. Not just scifi, but one of the best, period.

For you fans of Firefly & Serenity, I just finished reading the novel version of Serenity. It contained a lot more background information and added a lot of connections to the series. For example; it starts off with the Battle of Serenity Valley, and the weeks after the Browncoats surrendered, it also tells how the new flying Mule is the results of their earnings from the Lazarus theft.

It didn't add much to the actual content of the movie, and the dialogue is pretty much verbatim, but it was worth the read.

Any Steven Brust fans in here? Apparently he's a big fan of Firefly, and posts over on the Browncoats forum. He's written a Serenity novel and is one of the authors under consideration to write Serenity novels for Pocket Books. This is just way too cool.

And if you haven't read any of Brust's works yet (particularly the Dragaerean novels), you are missing out in a big way.

I'll certainly check out the Serenity novels. I may even get the comics.

I have all the comics, and I honestly don't think it's anything spectacular. The story feels a little disjointed to me. That could be because I didn't read comics as a child though.

Nope. I did read comics as a kid (and as a young adult) and the Serenity comics were quite disappointing. Of course, it could of been because I had high expectations from anything to do with Firefly/Serenity.

(Spoiler)

Anyone else notice the AR-18 never gets fired?

Come on man, in close quarters, low on ammo (as they say) and the Mal's rifle never utters a muzzle flash. :cuss:

OK I'm done now.

I will definitely check out the novels when they begin coming out.

That type there uses 5 or 7mm caps inside reusable brass cartridges... they're pretty cool when they work right- bang, flash, and spits out brass...

Kneecapping

This question has probably been asked and answered before so I'll apologize beforehand for beating a dead horse. But...

Does anyone know what carbine Shepard Book is shooting in "War Stories"? Didn't recognize it when I saw it and got curious.
