OK, that there is funny....but so are many other sacreligious jokes.

AK103K,

"What I find funny is, the one that's been in service longest, as the issue rifle, is the one most bitched about."

Well give me some credit, I have been pretty laid back about the Curse of Stoner of late. I just can not sit without responding to some of the AR Worshipper's stuff and not bang on my key board. I only come out when poked!

I was just stating a fact, and one that does seem to annoy some, for some reason. Then again, it usually doesnt take much. :)

I really dont worship any of them now. I like to shoot all of them, and Ive got a couple of boatloads of ammo through the M1's, M14's/M1A's, and the M16's/AR's. A few others too.

If I were to get back into match shooting, Id take the AR. For anything else, definitely the AR, and maybe an AK.

Another big plus for the AR's besides being more accurate is, so far, they havent tried to take my hand and head off and left a nasty ring in my right ear for the past 30 years, like the M1 has. M1's arent a lot of fun when they go grenade.

I have a '43 Springfield that was a Korean lender that had been brought back, when I'm not sure. In 2003 I bought it off a work friend for a good price. The barrel was so worn out at the muzzle from the use of steel cleaning rods it was completely smooth bore for the first inch. The best groups at 50 yards would just stay on a paper dinner plate, seriously. Also the bolt would not release when a clip was loaded, but would if you pulled back on the charging handle and let go.

Sent it to Fulton Armory and they installed a brand new mil-spec barrel, fixed the bolt release problem, and the rifle would group 3-4" at 100 yards with iron sights and 70's era Korean surplus. I was very happy with that.

I also have an M1917 Eddystone that was rebarreled during WWII with a Johnson Automatics two groove barrel. Really nice rifle, grabbed it for a hundred dollar bill at a 1992 gun auction. I believe once it was rebarreled it was stored as war reserve and never fired because that barrel looked every bit of brand new on the interior. I wish it could tell its story.

But as others have mentioned, each era brings a different "best ever". The M1 certainly filled the bill during its time.
I have two CMP Garands, the bolt is NOT supposed to go forward when an en bloc clip is inserted. Thats how you get M-1 Thumb. The clip is inserted and the operating rod handle is banged forward with the heel of the hand. Great weapon for it's time, and I wouldn't feel ill armed with it. You hit an enemy soldier with a .30/06 round and he stayed hit. I wouldn't have traded an M16A1 it for it though.

Dave' Naaaa...where's the rest of it?

On the up side, maybe a can could be added to the threads.....

What the hell's this world coming to when it's OK for lefties to shoot Garands?
IMO the M1 and M14 are ideal for LH use. Right hand loads and runs the bolt, LH stays on the grip, shoots and runs the safety. If I shot from my right shoulder I might consider the “left hand” M14 types out lately.

yep, AK is that way also. AR-15 easy also. Least lefty friendly is HK G3 and FAL but I manage those also just got to do some hand flipping

You guys even watch the video? It’s hilarious. Lucky gunner makes some of the best content on YouTube and these occasional “throwback” 1980’s videos are gems. You guys need to rent a sense of humor. ;)

And yes, the M1 Garand IS the coolest rifle ever. *runs for the hills* :D

Pretty sure most people didn't. The helmet test was definitive though.

I like the M-14 a lot. Very accurate and reliable. It wasn't ideal for South East Asia. The rifle wasn't that heavy but toting around hundred's of rounds of ammunition in those magazines was a killer. Unfortunately the rifle and especially the magazines rusted easily. Full automatic was impossible. After the first shot you went anti-aircraft. The first M-16's suffered a myriad of problems that could have been avoided, but the M16A1 with the RIGHT ammunition was perfectly reliable with the normal maintenance you'd give any weapon.

M1's were heavy but they worked really well back in the day. There are times now when they would be great. Like when someone is shooting at you from across a canyon or behind a barrier. I owned one for awhile. I was issued an M-14 my first tour, and an M-16 my second. Terry G pretty well covered it. I loved the M-14 but for close to moderate range and in an ambush the M-16 was a very good tool with it's high rate of controllable fire.
