Awesome

Awesome rifles !! I don't see that many pictures with McMillan stocks anymore, very nice :)

God these rifles are just dead sexy. Nothing like Walnut and Blued Steel (well parkerized) to get a gun guy going. Will post a picture when I get a chance but another Walnut clad Springfield M1A loaded owner here. Best gun purchase I have ever made.

And how many clicks from the bottom is that?

Also keep in mind the 2, 4, 6 thing is in meters. I just ignore the difference between meters and yards.

My Standard takes 10 clicks to get to the 300 yard zero, which corresponds with the dash mark in between the '2' and the '4.'

One thing I don't like about my SOCOM is I can't use the 2, 4, 6 indicators. How does SAI expect me to hit vehicles at 1,000 meters?!

damn it guys...

I just ordered SA scout and mounted a Leupold 2.5 scope on it in steel QD Leupold rings...very nice set up (hated to see it go but he's having an issue with it so it came back yesterday for me to clean inspect and test fire...think the chamber might have a rough spot (may just need a proper cleaning as I don't think he did before he shot it and I'm sure SA has anti rust stuff in there as opposed to oill...andway I'm going to go shoot it tomorrow. I kinda wanted this exact setup so my temptation is off the charts right now...though now I'm leaning towards a NM rifle instead.

You guys are NOT helping my budget with threads like this!! :what:

Why not?

(serious question, I don't own a SOCOM)

It's because SAI uses the same elevation knobs on their 16" guns as on their 22" guns, but the 16" gun's muzzle velocity is at least 150fps less than the 22" guns.

So you could zero a 16" and a 22" to hit dead center at 200 yards, but the 16" will be hitting a lot lower at 400 yards than the 22" gun, but it's still 7 clicks to go from the 2 indicator to the 4 indicator, because the elevation knobs are the same.

Both of mine have standard rear sights, not NM at all by the way.

this is clearly not mine and i am not 100% sure it's an M1A, but i love this picture, and maybe one of you can tell me what i'm holding.

Caliban, you are holding something I wish I was holding and then being able to put away in my safe.;)

it was a fun day.

me: hey, do you mind if me and my friend take some pictures?
owner (suspicious): of what, the products i'm selling?
me: no no, of each other, standing next to some guns. to freak out our liberal friends back in new york.
owner (brightens up): oh, sure! here, hold this, it's the most expensive gun i've got.

So I was just playing around with the ballistics calculator at handloads.com. With a 300 yard zero, M80 out of a 22" gun will be 60" below point of aim at 500 yards. Out of a 16" gun, it'll be 70" below point of aim at 500 yards. With a 300 yard zero, M855 out of a 20" gun will be 30" below point of aim at 500 yards. Out of a 14.5" gun, it'll be 35" below point of aim, again at 500 yards.

This kind of makes me want to get an AR. Maybe something like a rack grade M16A2 clone, except with a free-float tube so I can use a shooting sling. I think I could shoot a lot better with one. They're inherently more accurate, have lighter recoil, way flatter shooting, etc.
