1 mm is about 2 inch at 25 meters I think

*ouch*, that makes my head hurt.
That's how NASA accidentally crashed a probe into Mars instead of landing it gently. :-D

how about 1mm == 5cm @ 25m

Tiny notch....missed that part. Also managed to lose the tiny pin in anger and had to order another one. Is there something I can use to keep the magazine tube clamp ring thing on my barrel without harming it? It's completely loose and came off so I have it sitting in a bag wondering how I should put it back on and keep it on.

Those NASA guys should have taken flying lessons with Picard.

And Picard should have had more 39s on the Enterprise.

Beam some up, Scottie.

Ok Nematocyst....please add me to the club. I'm am very very interested in buying a Lever Action .22 and I am very happy to have found this thread. Word of Caution....I am reading every single page and as of now only up to page 3. I'm trying to decide which Marlin to get. Should I buy new or vintage. 39a or 39m? Annie Oakley styling? Barrel length? Where to find them? I will have question but boy am I glad I found this place!!!

Yes, one of each.

Kidding. Welcome to the club. You'll find no shortage of opinions on your questions here.

Important question: what are you going to do with it?
____________

Nice one, Roklok.

I'll be looking for something that I can plink around with at the range or farm. Put a scope on it and have it look good too! Something with heft to it. No light weight cheap feeling rifle for me. New or old makes no difference but I'm leaning more towards old school or Vintage. I've seen a pic or two that were steel. Nice looking! ok. I'm up to gage 5 now. What are some good sites to monitor? Gunbroker?

GMAN26;

I don't know what area of the country you're in, but I'd sure go to all the smaller mom & pop type gun shops for whatever distance around is reasonable to you & look. And put out the word that you are lookin' too.''

If you see any garage sale in the county with a lot of "guy stuff", invest a phone call, no telling what you might run across.

Yeah thats me...the new guy....with all 12 (now 13) posts!!! Anyway I'm from CT and I was thinking the same thing as you CB900F. I'm heading way up to Jonesport, Maine in July and was hoping to check out some trading posts and garage sales. My guess is the stuff online probably sells for more than I can find it locally. I have one GD close to me that wants to sell a new Anne Oakley for $500. I need to find out more about it.

Maybe I'll run up there today and get more info on it and report back. Make sure it's what I remember it to be.

Turns out that black and gold engraved Annie is $699. Not the $500 they told me on the phone two days ago. Funny how that is huh!

Anyway they have a older 39 that is on hold for someone else. Said he would call me if the 1st buyer didn't want it. It has the rear Williams 5D receiver sight like dfariswheels. It has the serial number of XX08L but I'll be dammed if I can figure out the year it was born. It's in pretty decent shape but I would probably refinish the stock. What would be a good price for this?

Ok...found another site that said it was born in 1954. Does that serial number look right to you guys?

Seeming to have problems with this rifle and it's driving me insane. I've figured out the problems and bought the tiny pin I needed for the magazine tube but I've done more damage than good in trying to get this tiny thing into it's hole.

First I knocked off the little tube clamp and am looking for tips on how to get it to stay on. If I slide it back into it's little groove area, it will only wiggle loose :( What's safe to use to hold it in place?

Secondly and more importantly....how in the hell do you get the little pin (in the picture below) to get in the little clamp? If you see the magazine tube in the picture..it's a bit scratched up. That was my previous attempt. I was told there is a little groove on the tube that I'm to line up with the pin when I place it in the hole. I think I see it but I'm not sure because there is about 10 scratches next to it from my stupidity. Now one end of this thing is a bit bigger than the other and won't go into the hole. I tried using a punch and it just made a mess of things. Do I need to take this to a shop :(?

The best way that I've found to start a roll pin is with a roll pin starter. A roll pin starter is like a punch with a "divot" in the end that holds the roll pin while you start it into the hole.

Then you can finish seating the roll pin with a roll pin punch. This punch has a "nipple" on the end and a reverse taper that supports the roll pin while you drive it in.

The right tools make all the difference in the world and save you hours of aggravation. Midway USA has a great selection of these punches.

Ok...so I've read up to page 30 so far. Many many more pages to go.

In the mean time is there some a place where I can find what the definitions of "conditions" are? If someone says it's in 75% good condition what exactly does that entail or what can I expect? If I'm looking at a rifle thats was made if 1954 what should I expect to see?

i went back to the GD today to double check on the 39 with the serial number of XX08L on it. (1954)? The guy they were holding it for bought it for the $385 dollar asking price. So the hunt for my first 39 is still on. Maybe I'll have better luck in Maine when I go there for Vacation.

Oh yeah....up to page 50 now....whew!!! Lots of reading. Hope I'll be a expert when I'm done.

GMAN- best of luck on your quest to find one. It took me a while to get my first one but others soon followed. I think the most I've ever owned at one time was four. Down to two now... I'd REALLY like to find a Cowboy or even a Cowboy barrel (24" Octagonal) and convert my Mountie to add to the collection and shoot in the silhouette matches. Almost got a guy talked out of one at the club but the more I talked the higher the price went...

Great guns, great fun. Shot mine earlier today just cuz I could. :D:neener:

Thanks for the info chicharrones...I'll check out those links tonight!

Mo

It just wasn't meant to be thats all...there's a better one out there thats all!
Even if I have to pay more money!

Alright I bought some of those punches but I'd like to re-attach the tube clamp back onto the barrel. Is this something I should let a gunsmith do so that I don't harm my barrel? Or is there something I can buy and use that is gun friendly.

Edit: I should add that I mean attach it so that it stays on. I can slide it on no problem but it will be too loose for my comfort.

Today I got to take my 39 out shooting away from a range for the first time in a long time. It's so great to fast shoot this lever gun. When I'm at a range with slow fire limits, I wonder why I still have my 39. Then all I need is an outing like today to remember why.

Hi dfariswheel. Good news. My gunsmith got the broken tank screw out using an "easy-out". He then made up a perfect new tang screw, carefully bent the tangs back into position using a length of copper pipe for leverage, and everything is good as new now. I have noted your information on not using HV ammo. My serial number is S10450. Sub-sonic ammo is great in this rifle. Thank you

Well, I can finally join, and not only that, join with a double.

I've had a new 39A on order thru my local shop for over a year. It finally came in last week, so I went to go get it.

And lo, while hefting my new one, there was another that the shop had just taken on trade the day before. Very clean, older model, smooth action, nice bore, good wood.

The shop owner said it wasn't for sale, and was holding for one of their own kids. I said, well, if you change your mind, call me first.

Got called last night. Picked it up today. I think I like it even better than the new one.

I don't see any serial numbers on it though. I'll have to figure out by other means how old it is...

Can't wait to try them out!
