There are several scopes that will almost certainly do for your stated uses. You'll get several suggestions, and probably none of them will be bad. However, what's a modest cost?

I'll suggest a Sightron 3-9X rimfire. Not sure what they're selling for these days, but something under $150.00 certainly. I've got one & it's good glass for the money.

Eject Problems

Hello. New to this forum.
I have my 39A for almost a year now. Since new, I occasionally have eject problems. The shell casing stays in the breach and is blocked from ejecting by a small protrusion above.

I need to use a dowel from the mussle end and something to lift the protrusion to eject the casing. This happens maybe one in 30 rounds.

sounds like your talking about the cartrige guide on the inside top of the reciever, used to nose the rounds into the chamber from the loading aspect of the rifle. I would try and gently bend the guide untill its even with the chamber.
to do that break the gun in half, clear the bolt and remove the guide(one screw) take two pairs of pliers and gently and carefully(so you dont bend at the screw hole and break the guide) bend it a litte way of the direction to even the guide to the barrel.

By "breach" do you mean the chamber or the reciever?
And, are you talking about ejection or "extraction"?

Just trying to better define the "protrusion". A pic might also help.
 
CaliCoastie, Thanks so much for identifying the age of my Marlin. The knowledge base of the members on this club is fantastic. I just joined but read every word on every page on the 39a and 336 club boards. I have learned so much.

2008 39a

I am curious, I have heard there are issues with certain newer built 39's. Mine is a 2008 bought brand new and I am wondering what I should look for. It seems to be just fine but maybe I am just ignorant. Can you shed some light?

A couple of things come to mind. The rebounding hammer is a safety feature that may or may not affect accuracy (compensated in part by the heavy barrel). Also, the coat hanger type extractor has a way of slipping with some tight fitting ammo, can also easily break if you finagle it too much. Both the rebounding hammer and extractor can be modified if you were to have issues with them.

Cycling the 39a has always been a bit finicky straight out of the box, this is partially due to the action's all-steel construction. Break in is usually 2 or 3 hundred rounds after which the action should perform flawlessly and last several lifetimes.

I agree with JustsayMo, if you're pleased with its performance, leave it as is.

I just wanted to say hello to everyone I just got on this forum I was looking for info on my 39A seril # D-8621 any one have any info on this fine rifle she's a little ruff but shoots like a dream the best trigger on any gun I have and that's quite a few thanks
 
Hi rdholmes and Welcome.. on looking at the dating chart it appears that your 39a was built in 1947. Hope you enjoy your stay here and be sure to post a picture of your beauty.
 
Marlin 39-a

The Marlin 39-A Marlin was the first rifle I ever bought with my own money. My Wife bought it for me as an Xmas present the first year we were married, I belive I got her a watch we were just kids starting out and it was 1963. I have had that old rifle ever since, it is like and old friend and I still shoot it and hunt with it a lot. It still is very acctuate and I have never had a problem of any kind with it. It still looks good and I have always been very proud of the rifle, the action is smooth as glass and it has a fine trigger. Makes me sick that Marlin sold really bothered me, but nothing last for ever I guess. I have shot a truck load of jackrabitts, and other varmits with this rifle. And I just like to carry it on short walks in the woods, I am old and fat now but my rifle is as if brand new and I just enjoy holding her in my hands and reliveing all the good time we have had. Only a GUN person understands that to others it is just an old man rambleing. GOOD LUCK TO YOU: ken

My 2008 model has not seen a lot of action yet, maybe a few hundred rounds. Going to change that real soon! Thanks again!
 
When I was in my teens I worked all summer saving for a 39a. The end of the summer came, and something else demanded my money. And my interest in a 39a kinda fizzled.
30 years pass.
I've gone throgh two distinct phases of obsession with EBRs, and still love 'em. But...
There's this thing I have about snakes. Our rural property is infested with beavers, which means that large portions are wet. Which means I see a lot of snakes. I don't see as many snakes as I used to, but I've been bitten by a water mocassin and it wasn't fun. Consequently, I get a real thrill out of killing a snake. (And no, I don't shoot anything but the pit vipers. Unless I cant tell. )
EBRs have this flaw when it comes to close up shots - the sights are about 1.5" off the bore, and when I encounter a snake at close range... I miss. Now I'm pretty fair at math, and I know how to compensate, but who has time to do calculus (or trig, or whatever) when your intended victim is slithering away?
So I thought about a small .22 pistol. But in the back of my mind, I was thinking... what about a 39a?
But I couldn't find one.
And then I did find one, and bought it, NIB.
I made a quick trip out to my "range", and was extremely depressed with the results. No amount of adjusting the rear sight would put it on teh paper at 25 yards. At 10 yards, it was low, barely on the paper. This is with the rear sight as high as it will go.
The store won't or can't help. They say, "send it back to Marlin."
I spent yesterday plotting revenge. My mood was dark.
This morning, I'm thinking I'll put a scope on it, just for testing and see what happens. (I've calmed down a bit.)
I did read one horror story about a guy with this problem. He sent it back to Marlin twice before he got it solved. Is that what I'm going to have to go through?
Anybody else had this problem?
(and, no, I haven't read through ALL of this thread yet. I'm going to get active and try the scope thing - tonight I'll do that...)
 
Brand new? Serial number starts with MR? REM stamped on the barrel just forward of the receiver? If so you have a new production Marlin (made by Remington), and a lot of people have been experiencing issues due to poor quality control. Good luck and you may have to return it to Marlin.
 
1st, @ CaliCoastie - the serial # starts with MR, but I don't see REM stamped on the barrel. I asked about this at the gun shop; they said "oh, these are Marlins."
I mounted a Millet DMS-1 on the rifle and took it to my range. Here's the first target:

I bore-sighted the scope prior to shooting. The first 3 shots - only one struck the paper; it is labeled 1. (I am aiming between Osama's eyes with the first few groups)
I rotated about 15 clicks and now 2 shots are on the paper. So I go hog-wild, rotate the dial 360 degrees, and get group #3.
I dont remember how much I adjusted for group 4, but I aimed at the red circle on his forehead and was blessed with group 4. Nice, huh? If only...
Then I adjust a few clicks to the left and get group 5.
This was with a box of Yellowjackets.
I loaded a mag with Rem target ammo.
This is that target -

By now I am totally disgusted. Just to make sure it isn't me, I whipped out my 6.8 SPC and fired a 3 shot group.

Not perfect, but it's not me.

well either the guys at your gun shop dont know whats happend to marlin(ie the fact marlin was bought out) or they are being difficult, and know what happening to them, and just want you to deal with marlin.
Hell even the pawn shops i deal with will stand behind the firearms they sell, the fact that they want you to deal with marlin...... Call marlin, and unfortunatly be prepared to wait some, my friend sent off a 30-30 at the end of november.... and there is still no word back from marlin. good luck, i would ask the local shop to make things right, if they dont have offer any support. Well i hold grudges to the point i wont even go to a LGS here where i live, even for a great deal(i wont set foot in it, the place can come down on their heads for all i care).
Run over to marlinowners.com and check it out. they have many threads on the products leaving with Marlins name on them since the buy out.
 
39d are harder too find than mounties, if the price was nice (under 450) jump on it, and they could be going for more these days. Good luck.
 
The 39-D was only made from 1971 to 1973, so they're one of the more rare Marlin's.
Strangely, the Blue Book doesn't value it more than a 39-M.
