Hmm.. I'm going with the Colt 1903 for variety's sake. There are too many to list though and agree with most of the suggestions on the thread.

No wrong answers

All good answers here. Beautiful examples of 1903. For many, the most "classic looking handgun" may well be the Detective Special.

You just wanted to show those 1903's off! And rightly so-beautiful pistols.

When I think of a Classic handgun the Colt Single Action Army comes to mind.

The Luger pistol is, hands down, the most elegant, classical and best feeling handgun ever produced, even if not completely reliable.

I would say Colt Single Action Army.

Maybe I grew up watching to many westerns but when I think of a handgun the Colt comes to mind. A close second would be a 1911 GI.

+1 I agree

When I think "Handgun" I think either Colt 1911 if semi-auto, if it's a single action revolver, it's a Colt Single Action Army, if it's a DA/SA then it's a S&W model 19-4.

For pure aesthetics and handling, my personal favorite is the 1851 Colt. What can I say, handling one is like handling a finely balanced rapier.

Kinda depends what type of handgun...

DA revolvers... 4" Skinny Barrel Mdl 10 S&W my idea of a "Service Revolver"

SA revolvers... New Model Glossy Stainless Vaquero

Autoloader the 1911-A1

Since the OP started with S&Ws I'll play along and show you my idea of a "classic" Smith and it's not the ones they now sell called classics either.

This is a 5" barreled 357 Magnum that shipped in 1953 with the Manga stocks shown (numbered to the gun). These would later come to be called the pre-M27s. When I think S&W revolver this is the gun that comes to mind, even though it is not my absolute favorite. That is, however; my favorite barrel length for the S&W N-frames.
