The old Marlin strikes again.

Here is a quick photo of a decent 8 point that I shot yesterday this is my first rifle season buck of 2011. He sucumbed to my trusty old Marlin 336W 30-30 at about 4:45 yesterday evening.

I started hunting with an old Marlin 336 a few years ago and truely like hunting with it in it's shot distance capability.
What scope is that on yours and what type of ammo did you use?

The Scope is actually a Nikon Omega Muzzloading scope and the ammo I used was 150 grain Remington Core lokts ( not the best ammo but I'm out of 30-30 components at the moment and all the local hardware store carries is Remington ammo).

Truthfully,any factory soft point of deer nature that shoots well in your rifle is good enough and the buck in the picture is proof enough.

Fine deer. Looks tastey. How far was the shot? Thinking of scoping a 30-30 too.

I'd say it was about an 80 yard shot. IMO a lower powered optic of some sort is fine and dandy for the old 30-30(or any lever action) I know some who would object to scoping a lever action (due mostly to nostalgia) but in the woods I'll take every advantage I can get.

Also once you are north of 45 years of age most of us dont have the sight we did at 25.
Thus a scope can make the difference between a bad shot and a good one.
Not to mention the difference a scope makes on an 80 yard shot the first ten minutes after legal shooting light and the last ten minutes of legal shooting light.
Give me a scope over nostalgia anyday.

Lots of gun writers say the 30-30 is a 75 yard gun. We know better. Shot placement is big factor and scope is big advantage. I used to pop beer cans at 250 yards with 170 gr bullets. I put the scope on another gun hence why I should rescope it. If you get the chance try leverevolution in 30-30. It more than doubles the 30-30's energy at 300 yards. Have fun and bangaway.

Not trying to start a thread drift here but everyone pretty much says that Levereloution extends the range of the 30-30 etc.
BUT what does it realisticly do in MOST lever action 30-30's that come with a 20 inch barrel and not a 24 inch barrel that this round is actually tested on compared to the other 150-170 grain offerings??

I'm glad you hunted with a 30-30 carbine instead of plastic stocked bolt action magnum rifle. I guess I'm an opinionated admirer of lever action carbines.

Nice buck! Maybe I should switch from my .35 Remington (336) to my .30-30 (30AS). Haven't had an opportunity for a shot with the 35 Rem. What do you think?

Yeah I tried some of the Hornady leverevolution ammo and I can say it was very high quality ammo and greatly improved the accuracy and range of my rifle however most of my hunting is done in very close quarters ( I.E. 50-100 yards) so I really I couldn't really justify the extra cost when I couldn't really take advantage of the extended range and accuracy the ammo offered.

The 35 Remington is a fine cartridge from what I hear however I have no first hand experience with it so I can't really say but I do know one of my Dad's friends who is from North Miss. that hunts some pretty heavily wooded areas and swears by it and claims it is a very adequate medium/large game woods cartridge

Yeah a lot of younger guys my age( I'm only 16 Y.O.) seem to be cashing in on this whole " magnum craze" that seems to be sweeping the hunting and shooting by storm however for me I tend to place a bit more value on accuracy rather than power, heck one of our neighbors was toting a 300 Win. Magnum into the woods and a another guy ( who I know very well and is a dear family friend who came down to hunt with us) was using a Browning BAR in 7mm Remington magnum he shot it a little before hitting the woods to check his scopes zero and could barely a 12' inch by 24' piece of cardboard at 100 yards much less his target that was stuck to it.
