My Ruger Old Army that was my Grandpas, this is one of my favorite weapons. Its been shot a lot he used in competition. I myself since I obtained it after his death when I was 12 have put over a 1000 shots through it. Thank god I make my own bullets and balls.

Just wanted to brag on finding quite the source for 190-gr Buffalo Bore .457" conicals . . . don't want to reveal it because I want to drink my fill first. Man, the ROA . . . I can understand why Bill Ruger liked it best of all his handguns.

Hi all, first post on THR since I just joined to show off my new ROA. I was at my local dealer trading in two seldom used guns (Ruger 22/45 and Taurus .357 snubby) with the intent of picking up a S&W .44 mag, but as luck would have it this pristine stainless ROA was sitting right next to the S&W in the display case. Whether it was fate, destiny, or dumb luck, I'm not sure, but I knew I couldn't walk out the store without it. I've had my eye on picking on up for a long time now, but just never found the right one (at a reasonable price). A few blued models came through, meh, but this was the one!
It's actually quite new, being a "cleanup" model with a high serial number 148-124XX. Who knows, could be the last one made! Appeared unfired, or very lightly.
Like other clean-up models, it has the poorly-fitting rosewood looking red SR logo grips:
Warning is stamped on the top of the barrel (have seem some on the sides):
Anyway, I fired my first BP shots today, what fun. Very mild "poof" sound and no recoil whatsoever. The gun shop threw in some stuff with the purchase so I ended up using the Hornady round balls, Pyrodex 35 grain pellets, CC #11 caps, and I forget the name of the bore lube stuff but it was green and pine smelling.
Here it is after cleanup:

Dunno how I missed this thread. This is my mid-1970s vintage Ruger Old Army. My father (RON in PA here on THR) gave me this as part of a trade. He shot this ROA in competition quite a bit in the late 70s, and brought home a lot of prizes with it.
I'm making a mistake financially by modifying the crap out of my ROA. I'm likely reducing the value while spending a fair amount of change. However, that's my nature. I do it to all the toys I have, guns, cars, boats....hey, you can't take it with you.

AbitNutz, I hear ya, but that's how it is. I'm picking up new fancy tooled leather today, and waiting on elk stag grips. I'd think twice if I was thinking about selling someday... but I'm not selling.
Apparently, I have way too much time on my hands. 
I made a near useless video on how to load a R&D conversion cylinder in an ROA. I say "near useless" because for the vast majority of y'all on this forum it'd be intuitively obvious how to use a R&D conversion cylinder. I made the video more for those who don't own a ROA yet and are considering buying one plus a conversion cylinder and wanted to see the mechanics of the loading process. Anyhow if you have 5 minutes of your life to waste that you'll never get back..... :banghead:

Which brand and what size caps do you prefer,why?

Any one polished their ROA stainless and removed scratches with any good success. I bought a used one, the cylinders and barrel look perfect but the gun is scratched up quite a bit from handling.
I would like it to look better not worse, so I am hesitant to take a tool to it. (rubbing compound or steel wool even)

I first heard about Mother's Mag and Aluminum Wheel polish from Scrat.

Then I learned that a friend used it on 2 of his SS S&W 617 revolvers and they polished out to have a brilliant mirror like finish. If you like the look of a highly polished mirror lustre then maybe you want to give it a try. But there's no reversing it once it's that polished. And it should make cleaning it up after shooting easier too.
