They call it an upgrade but the only actual upgraded cylinders I’m aware of come from Clements or classicballistx.com both have greater powder capacity and are a drop in of excellent quality. The RANCAN cylinder is cheap, true but if you want the highest quality readily available replacement www.classicballistx.com is there place to go.

@rabid wombat is it fixed or adjustable sighted? The fix sighted models go for more, up to a thousand a piece. Depends on condition of course but 5-700 seems like a reasonable price for an adjustable sighted model in good to excellent condition.

Prices can have a wide variation depending on where you find it and condition as woodnbow mentioned.
Local gun shops or private individuals will sometimes sell them for $400 - $500 which is very reasonable.
New or like new can cost $700 - $1000 such as on internet auction sites which are on the high end but not considered to be too unreasonable for folks who really want a certain model and can find what they're looking for.
Any price midway between the high and low of $400 - $1000 is also considered to be reasonably acceptable which is what woodnbow menrioned.

I will agree with articap, & woodnbow,and say about the lowest price you could hope to be lucky enough to find is $400 for a Stainless Steel Adjustable Sight Ruger Old Army in decent condition.
They occasionally sell at that price, but don't last long so you could scour auctions, listing, and shops constantly and still miss out.
If one gets listed as a buy it now on one of the auction sites for $400 it will sell FAST, as in less than an hour or two. Maybe just a few minutes.

The above comments to price are spot on, took me yrs to get my 2nd SS ROA by sheer luck, it was listed as a B/P pistol, not Ruger and Only a few of us bid, got it for $325 shipped, it did have a rough spot in the bore, apparent squib left in too long, shot fine, but I'm real picky, was going to get rebarreled till someone had a frame not being bid on so I jumped, it was excellent/possibly unfired, so I blended the best of both, still under $450 invested and a spare frame and barrel, I may just have shortened as the bad spot is 1 1/2" back from end of 7 1/2" barrel.

I would pass. The stainless with the adjustable sights are the most common variety. I picked up a blue 7 1/2" with adj. sights for $350 at a pawn shop about 2 years ago. Granted that they are more now, $450-500 would be the most I'd pay for that gun.

Cabelas is telling me that a Ruger Old Army requires a FFL background check, and a permit to purchase or a carry permit to buy a Ruger Old Army in Minnesota.

This is used in their gun library and is not modified and does not include a conversion cylinder.

That could be a state requirement, as some states require any B/P gun to go through an FFL, ATF and Federal laws still consider the ROA as with all B/P specific guns, not requiring FFL, however, if the ROA also has a conversion cylinder and they are shipped together, then yes, then it's a FFL pistol.

They are wrong. Minnesota law treats the Old Army as a non firearm. A good friend lives there (about 60 miles from Canada) and he constantly buys and sells bp guns...

They are wrong. I lived in Minnesota until 11 months ago and bought 3 ROAs never needing the background check.

If I were you I’d look up the statute and bring it by the shop. Shooters and law abiding citizens have enough problems without having to obey laws that don’t even exist.

One local gun shop has a sign that says they have the right to refuse to sell to anyone they chose.
That shop and others require customers to fill out an FFL form to buy BP guns even if they don't actually do the state background check and aren't required to.
If you really want to buy the gun then it's a lot easier to just grin and bear it than to make an issue out of it because that's how they can end up denying the sale.

I’ve run across this online too... guys wanting to send bp guns through my ffl. It’s just me but I believe in smaller government and fewer regulations and I’ll be damned if I will give my business to anyone who creates laws and regulations out of thin air. Your mileage may vary...

Everyone chooses the hills they will die on. This is one of mine but then, I believe most of the GCA ‘68 is unconstitutional and should be so ruled. (Remember when a citizen could send a check to an outfit in New York City and they would send you a surplus M1917 in the mail?)
