BIG NEWS FOLKS!!!

I just had a conversation with the lady from Howell Arms https://www.howellarms.com/ regarding manufacturing of SMOKELESS CYLINDER FOR MUZZLE-LOADING REVOLVER, using 209 shotgun primers. They have patent for such cylinder:

https://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?CC=US&NR=2005016050&KC=&FT=E&locale=en_EP#

US2005016050 (A1) - SMOKELESS CYLINDER FOR MUZZLE-LOADING REVOLVER

espacenetImage.jpg

They made some years back, and as it stands now, they consider that market is limited for such product, and have no intention of manufacturing it at present time. However, if we can organize group buy and have order for at least 50 cylinders to be made, either standard alloy (blue) or stainless, they will consider manufacturing them again. As for the price, I do not have it yet, but expect to be tad more than their conversion cylinders for 45 ACP and 45 Colt.

So what do you say on this, anybody interested?

In the mean time, I will post the same on two other forums, and hopefully, we will have order for 50.

Onty,
As to your BIG NEWS, I'd be interested.
Let us know more details as they come to fruition.
I'd need to know a price, exactly what I was getting, and how long I'd be waiting before I committed any cash to the venture.

Welcome LarsUlmann! :D

Hello guys, let me show you my guns - the beauty and the senior.
The ROA is from 1975, and the 1858 NMA is new, both with conversion cylinders and home (re)loaded .45LC smokeless rounds.

Congratulation Lars on excellent pair of revolvers. It's interesting to see ROA and Remington 1858 side by side. I had noticed that Remington has longer grip. I guess must be more comfortable to hold it.

Just started new thread Any interest for smokeless powder cylinder with 209 primers for Ruger Old Army? https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...r-with-209-primers-for-ruger-old-army.873826/ . So if you and others are interested, please post there. Specify how many cylinders, and would you like blue or stainless.

As for price, I would say close to their current cylinders for 45 Colt and 45 ACP. Will contact them for more info about that.

Indeed, the Remy grip is more comfortable to hold. Plus, a great advantage of it vs. ROA is the cylinder ring gate that is not supported for ROA yet. Unfortunately the ROA loses nearly all of its advantages vs. the Remy when using conversion cylinders with smokeless loads. Still, I love both guns and I surely would not sell my ROA under any circumstances.

ROA experts, I will appreciate your advice.

I have a pair of Stainless ROAs used in cowboy action competition. There is a very noticeable difference in the ease with which the hammer falls between these two revolvers. Easing the hammer down from full cock, one gun allows the hammer to fall smoothly with very little interference as the hammer plunger cams over the cylinder latch. Hardly any hesitation at all as the hammer moves forward. The other revolver has developed a profound "hitch" or "drag" about halfway down on its journey towards the nipple. Enough so that sometimes the cap will not ignite on the first strike. I am guessing the drag happens as the hammer plunger is compressed while it rides over the cylinder latch. But maybe it is something I have not thought of. I have disassembled the problem child and don't find any burrs on the cylinder latch or exposed hammer plunger. I have not removed the plunger from the hammer, I was hoping I would not have to do that.

I will appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks.

Have you considered swapping out one part at a time till you find the guilty part as it shows up in the other pistol?

I would say you probably bent the hammer plunger. They usually break though. Rugers Won't stand rapid firing if by some chance you don't get the hammer pulled back fully before letting it go again. I have a Ruger single six that has had it's plunger broke twice now and a Ruger Blackhawk that has broke once fanning them. I quit fanning them after that. They break right at the end of the notch that's cut in them.

The part is the same among the "3 screw" crowd (can be easily made). Not sure if it is compatible with any of the 2 pin variety.

Mike

Have you removed the plunger from the hammer to see if it is broken? Very small pin holding it in. I think a 1/16" punch will do the job.

Update:

Thanks to 45 Dragoon for generously sharing his time and knowledge in private conversations. With his guidance I put a radius on the backside of the hammer plunger, which coincidentally removed some burrs. The radiused surface allows the hammer plunger to move over the cylinder latch much more smoothly as the hammer falls towards the cap. I think the problem is resolved.

I'm very grateful for Goon's help and the spirit of friendship demonstrated by all you folks on THR.

The pin moved easily enough that I could drift it out with a small finishing nail using finger pressure. Which is nice because I could not find my 1/16" punch in the garage!

Greetings to all the good folks here !! Yes, I am alive and kicking. Cant wait for this election to be over and done with. Also this nasty corona virus bs is keeping most of the shooting ranges here closed up. The open air [out in the boondocks] shooting ranges are pretty strict on wearing a mask at all times, even if you are shooting alone. Kind of ridiculous if you asked me. I like to smell and savor the burnt smell of black powder in an open range. It is like an aroma only a die hard ROA aficionado can only understand. Boom boom, sniff sniff !!

Lately she has been bitchin' around ,'cause there are no beauty parlors that will take her in. After that recent fiasco, no one wants anything to do with her, or her kind. Sad to say, but my poor State has a lot of folks just like her. We have indeed gone to the dogs here. Hoping for a miracle to change things around soon. Stay safe boys. Load those ROA's to the brim, let out that resounding kaboom and bellowing smoke for all to hear and see. A good healthy ROA lets everyone know ! Fooom !
