Yes I DO know about the interchangeability of SOME parts with the Blackhawk line. Own a good number of Blackhawks too. As of the line being used to make fast selling Vaqueros, also know and knew about that as the Vaquero rakes in more money for them. As of bringing it back. I dont think they even think of that at all. It is simply a matter of economics.$$$$$$. One thing is for sure, they can not completely build another Old Army anymore. Half an Old Army, maybe a third, unless the molds and CNC machines start rolling again. That IS what I meant. Simply a matter of economics, nothing more, nothing less. If the old man was still around this would have never happened. Just wanted to inform the good members here that IF something breaks in their OLD Army, you can no longer be SURE you will still find THAT certain part. In fact VERY FEW parts are common to each other in regards to the Blackhawk line. The OLD ARMY has a lot of very UNIQUE parts. Not just the cylinder! The frame alone is not interchangeable with any other! As are a host of other parts. Very few parts can be sourced back to the Blackhawk line, very few.The parts THAT were gathered up were the UNIQUE parts for the Ruger Old Army only, that is what I meant. Best regards mykeal and all the good members here, all the very best to you all. HOLD ON TO YOUR ROA's!

100 fine members! Bravo ROA club! Bravo!

Great looking Old Army, DanCarey, you will be given Number 100 for sure by ClemBert! What a great number to have! Cherish that pistol. They are getting pretty scarce in that condition every single day.

Let's make it 101, and aim for 200!

Dang, I've been watching this thread for a long time, and always hoped to come in at #100, since I missed being "Number 7" a long time ago...

Oh well, #101 is just fine too! ;)

Here's a listing of some modifications that I've done to my girl... Hope you all enjoy it.

Anyway, let's start off with a modified front sight:
    Old_Army_front_sight.jpg

15+ years ago, I hand cut & filed one each of these for my Dad's and my Old Army's years ago, as the undercut partridge-style sights are better (for us) for target shooting. Plus, we don't plan to be doing any "fast draw" with them anyhow! My Dad is gone now, but my twin still has the Old Army -- we'll have to make a point to get them out this summer and make some smoke!

Since every decent front sight deserves a decent rear, my Dad and I both added Millet rear sights to our Old Army's.
    Old_Army_rear_sight.jpg

Some might question what this sight offers versus the stock Ruger model, and the basic answer is the WIDE and FLAT rear blade, which is the entire back of the sight. To us, this sight blade is more consistent in all lighting conditions; whereas the stock Ruger blade is inset into the sight body and you can sometimes pick up some glare off the sight itself.

One note... While we bought Millet sights intended for the Ruger Blackhawk series, if I remember right, we had to do some minor and very careful* filing to fit these correctly. (* As my late Dad would say, "Just go slow and check the fit often, as the metal-take-off tool works MUCH better than the put-back-on tools!")

This mod of a smooth trigger face is entirely personal; some may want it, others may not. My Dad kept his ROA trigger stock, but I didn't like the feel of the grooves on the trigger, so I filed them out.
    Old_Army_smooth_trigger.jpg

I know I'll never have to shoot the Old Army "double action", but I do like the way the trigger feels now.

First, a necessary disclaimer: You are on your own and assume any and all liability for messing up your Old Army (or anything else!) if you work on your trigger without knowledge and/or guidance. The writer assumes no responsibility for anything you do.

(Whew, now that we've got that out of the way...)

I'll admit I got some expert help on these trigger mod's, but it well worth it and greatly improved the trigger feel and pull on my Old Army.

The small red rectangle imposed on the pix below represents a "trigger stop", which is a small piece of aluminum inserted in the rear of the trigger pin (forget the exact name of that Ruger part). This piece is fit by trial & error, and was recommended by a friend who shoots Old Army's in the NMLRA Territorial Matches. He walked me through the process, and with his help and a good set of gunsmith screwdrivers -- and a bunch of assembly/disassembly steps -- the trigger stops dead just after she releases (used to be another 1/8" of travel or more!).
    Old_Army_trigger_work.jpg

The dashed red circle indicates careful polishing work to the trigger's internals... I won't say any more other than the trigger now releases clean at 2.75#, using the stock springs.

Those two mod's are the best changes I've made to my Old Army and are most responsible for the great shooting she can do -- when I do my part, that is.

After all the prior mod's were done, I finished her off in style with a set of Silver/Black laminate grips custom made by Lett's -- they used to be the custom grip maker for Ruger, but I believe they are out of business now. I really like the way the silver/black contrasts with the stainless finish.
    Old_Army_grips.jpg

    That's all for now...

Later I'll have to post pix of the custom rammer I had made and the work I did to clean up the forcing cone, which was really roughly done from the factory.

    Tight groups!

Just won an auction on Gun broker for an unfired NIB ROA for $425, seems like a pretty good deal. Can't wait for it to get here now.

Where can I find .457 conicals? My local stores don't have any and everywhere online either doesn't list them or are sold out.

    .457 Conicals

CRAZYSCCRMD: Try Cabelas and Midway arms. IF they don't have such a plain jane common item like that, that is unbelievable! Come on now! All the best on your quest. Maybe others here know of a source for that. I can't believe the big boys don't have them! Best regards, Joe

I never really looked for conical bullets at the big box gun stores. They never jumped out of me so they really may not have them. I bought some "buffalo" brand bullets on line but I think they may be gone now. Even so, they were crazy expensive but were really nicely made and quite accurate

I always cast my own now but when I first got my ROA I wasn't sure how much I would shoot it, so I bought them on line.
Track of the Wolf has some. And if you got to BigLube.com, he lists several casters of his bullets http://www.biglube.com/Links.aspx

Now, my all time favorite load is a "DD-ROA FLAT Big Lube®LLC 210 grain six cavity mold for ROA" that I had half the cavities converted to Hollow Point by HP Mold service. Eric from HP Mold Service, he sends along some nose punches that lets you use an RCBS type lubrisizer.

So, just mail order them from the list.....

But all of that plus the lead pot requires true commitment.

One last word of advice, if you haven't found this out yet...you'll need a loader. Loading conical bullets with a ram on the gun isn't pracical

    .457 conicals for roa....

You could always try .454 pure lead conicals as Ruger states in their official INSTRUCTION/OWNERS MANUAL for the ROA. They should be much easier to ram-in as they are a bit smaller in diameter than the .457 types. Most, if not all .457 conicals are heeled at the base of the bullet to help in insertion into the tight chambers of a ROA cylinder. A .454 conical should work out fine as that is what Ruger says to use in their manual. Give it a shot as they are more readily available instead of those .457 conicals that seem to be harder to source. Good luck and all the best,.... Joe

    Dan Carey's new ROA grips....

Oh Yeah, like they would say here in the Republik of **********, FANTAVULOUS grips! Those are indeed very, very nice! The old man must be smiling up there, his most favored pistol all dressed up like that! He must be.

I finally found one that I could afford ($275) so I could join. Shot a cylinder full and then spent 2 hours tearing it all the way down for a cleaning. It was obvious it had not been done in a very long time. I'm not particularly enamored of the white plastic grips so will either make some out of walnut or purchase a set somewhere. For now I just want to shoot it some more.

275.00 WOW... I would buy them all day long at that price.

The ROA is the best blk pwder revolver ever made and the value does nothing but go up. I have watched the prices on these go from the low 200s to 500 and up in just the last 10 years. Not many guns increase like that and they are a great shooting gun... I hunt deer with mine and have made lung shots with it at 60 yards without any problems.

I do love my ROA's, but actually Tingle made a 6 shot b/p revolver that was supposed to be stronger and more powerful than the ROA, and actually made back in the late 60's, but as with the ROA the price was prohibitive, now because so few were made they might as well be made of gold based on the price of the few I've seen.
