The RUGER OLD ARMY Club

Kaido gave me the numbers. That's why I chose the 240 grn version as .460" just sounds a bit too large.

Mine weren't lubed and so I used my Gatofeo's #1 lube which is a bit gummy. Maybe it was the reason for the bullet creep, and not so much the recoil.

Then again I use the same lube for my 170, 195, and 285 grn cast bullets, though they have a slightly longer bearing surface for more friction.
 
Range Report on the New ROA

I fired 3 cylinders full today out of my 1858 Rem (Uberti), 1860 Colt Army (Uberti) and ROA. The Rem and Colt were pretty well fouled and partially inop after three cylinders while the ROA had the same fouling but was good to go for more. The three guns were all capable of 4" groups for me at 15 yards.

I use .454 balls through the Ubertis and .457 balls through the Ruger. The Ruger lead shaving was a consistent size ring for all six cylinders.

The ROA is a great gun...I may just have to go find another...and another...

Why lube an already perfectly configured bullet whose first driving band already drops in perfectly into an ROA's cylinder ? It needs 'tension' "wall tension'. Ram that sucker in good. If you aint got the strength, then get an outboard bullet loader for geez sake. Tight is GOOD !! You don't lube something that's already loose. Ever wonder why cartridge reloading equipment come with long levers ? ..................

25 Gr. IIIf Goex, a little cornmeal. a .457" round ball, plus a dab of Bore Butter to seal the deal.
Sub 2" clusters at 25 Yards make me very happy!:cool:

More power is not needed, as there is no hunting with handguns allowed in Canada.:(

For those interested, I recently paid $1,200.00 for this ROA pair.

A nice pair of ROA's, and on todays market actually a fair price for a pair of stainless guns. Welcome to the club and a darn shame you can't hunt with them. I really enjoy rabbit and occasionally squirrel shooting with mine, only used one for a finishing shot on a high shot deer a few seasons ago, worked great from 10 yds.

I just snagged a fairly descent deal on the Ruger Old Army in the box manufactured in 1994. Only a slight turn line and perfect grips, cylinder and bore. Only 50 rds fired and it came with a loading stand and a pound of Goex FFF. For those wondering I got it all for $500 out the door.

Beginning hunt loads

I don't have a computer and so I have very limited time and access. Can anyone give me some beginner bullets and powder loads to start tuning in my Old Army for deer hunting? If you could send emails it would save me a lot of time and trouble! I thank anyone who can help me out because as a paraplegic my opportunities are so limited for this sort of enjoyment. My pistol is a stainless steel made about 1976.
 
ROA cylinder over rotation

G,day i have a problem with the cylinder over rotating sometimes when i cock the hammer.... ive looked at the cylinder catch and spring all seems ok and also the catch indentations around the cylinder seem fine .....am i just cocking the hammer to fast ?? causing the loaded chamber to go past the hammer slot
Now every time i cock it i,m paranoid about it and now find myself looking through the hammer slot to see if the cap is lined up properly and hand indexing the cylinder backwards until its in the proper position....
any ideas would be great.

It should NOT over rotate no matter how hard and fast you cock it. My recommendation is to return it to Ruger for repair. I suspect the problem is the bolt spring unless you or a previous owner have played with something else.

Thanks for the input ive opened out the spring a little to see if this will just give the catch a little more pressure......
Being in Australia maybe some what of a hassle to send to ruger.
