Finally bought one, in order to protect my newly-acquired Garand:).

The guide's opening is so small that only a tiny patch can fit in the hole.
Is the small opening designed to only permit a brass brush to squeeze through? If so, the idea is to let Hoppe's #9 in the bore to simply evaporate? :( Most seasoned gun owners seem to frown on this idea.

The adapter piece on my plastic cleaning rod is brass (connects to a Narrower plastic Tip), and though results in an exposed edge, does a tiny bit of cloth around the brass edge provide enough protection?

The generic cleaning rod etc came from Bass Pro over a year ago, and then I was not at all impressed with their replacement parts which are not as wide as adapters (proper term?).

I know of two styles, and there may be more. The first is a brass protector that drops into any .308" diameter bore to protect the crown, including a Garand -

The second is a larger Delrin affair that fits only a Garand -

I believe both have a rather small opening that is designed to accept the typical cleaning rod used for centerfire rifles. (Not the smaller cleaning rod diameter used for .22's) I only have experience with the first one, however.

The damage to the crown occurs from lateral scrubbing of the cleaning rod against the bore.

The muzzle protector is placed on the cleaning rod behind the brush or patch. The cleaning tool won't fit through the muzzle protector. It's OK to start the cleaning tool and then insert the muzzle protector behind it. As long as the muzzle protector is in place before the cleaning rod has a chance to bend sideways and rub, it will work fine.

Remember to hold it in place as you withdraw the cleaning rod, or you can tip the barrel and rub the cleaning rod against the crown on the way out...

Thanks.
Man, wish I were not so ignorant about such simple procedures.
Read your comments twice, now it makes sense.

Maybe the Garand guide (from Midway) will also fit onto the Norinco SKS and Lee-Enfield #4 (not the #5s).

I leave the bore guide on the cleaning rod. I didn't know there was another way. :D

I just shove the patch or brush into the muzzle, slide the cone down to the muzzle, and Do The Deed. Very easy.
