DOMESTIC ENEMIES: THE RECONQUISTA
By Matthew Bracken

In 1973, a Frenchman named Jean Raspail wrote a bitter and paranoid novel about the "invasion" of his native land by starving Third World refugees. The book was a racist vision of the consequences of non-white immigration, aided and abetted, in the author's view, by the weak-minded liberals who failed to resist it. For almost 35 years, The Camp of the Saints has been a Bible to the radical right.

Now, courtesy of former Navy SEAL Matthew Bracken, comes the American version — a portrait of the apocalypse Bracken fears will overtake America thanks to undocumented immigration from the south. The book is a fictionalized version of the Aztlan conspiracy theory — the idea that Mexico is secretly planning a "reconquista" (reconquering) of the seven states of the Southwest — that now animates large swaths of the anti-immigration movement. It's being plugged on extremist websites, in gun magazines and similar electronic venues, and on immigrant-bashing radio shows like Peter Boyles' program on KHOW-AM in Denver.

This isn't the first angry, self-published novel from Bracken. His new book, Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista, is the second in a series that began with another paranoid fantasy about gun control and evil agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, a favorite bête noire of the extreme right. His latest book, marked by an enthusiastic interest in busty women, is a xenophobe's racy vision of hell.

~SNIP~

Domestic Enemies plods along between the over-the-top action sequences. Bracken oversexualizes his gun-loving heroine, devoting as much prose to her breasts as he does her weapons — which is a lot — and many minor players come off as one-dimensional caricatures. But a sexy heroine shooting guns of varying calibers at liberal, communist, open-borders villains in a world destroyed by immigration and multiculturalism is an irresistible fantasy for the audience this genre of fiction attracts – no matter the novel's numerous flaws.

Of course, this fictionalization is hardly necessary, even for those given to this kind of thing. All one need do is listen to real-life zealots like Glenn Spencer, head of the hate group American Border Patrol, who puts it like this: "Our country is being invaded by Mexico with hostile intentions. When it blows up, they can't say we didn't tell them, when the blood starts flowing on the border and in L.A. We're [talking] about la reconquista."

Oh, the SPLCenter doesn't like it? Color me shocked.

Nothing written in that article suprises me, Matt; consider the source. Oh, and keep up the great work!! :D

Yeah, that's my exact reaction, too!
There's an old bromide; "There are none so blind as those who will not see." The rantings of the lieberals ...ahem, er, I'll play nice and say liberals ... sound exactly like that: they WILL NOT see.

I can't believe that The Southern Poverty Law Center has found a home in my state, which is fairly conservative. Oh, we do have liberals, {and we're even polite to them when we remember to be ;-) } Oh well; even the best of states has a few bad apples. Morris Dees has turned into rather a publicity and money monger/whore, though.

Where??? Where???? I am currently 95% of the way through ReConquista and I dispute the accuracy of this review. It certainly isn't an objective review -- not that I'd actually expect that from someone at the SPLC.
I don't know how truly prescient ReConquista is. I will say that I do believe if we don't do something about the enormous influx of illegals {and we DO HAVE THEM here in N. Alabama, too!!} in this country the future will not be too different than the image of America presented in the book.
The idea of "reconquista" is real and not a figment of any author's imagination -- perhaps the SPLC should realize that and get their heads on straight that this problem will fester, and eventually explode, if not dealt with soon.

Travis...I recommend you take SPLC's as a complement to your work -- just keep in mind where it comes from, and that shouldn't be too hard!!:D

And keep on writing -- if you want a GOOD review I'll be happy to provide one!

Ahh, the Southern Poverty Law Center, founded by Morris Dees, brother of our favorite screaming million mommie, Donna Dees-Thomases. It runs in the family, doncha know.

I was in a chat room where she appeared, late as usual. She hung around answering questions for a couple minutes until I got this question in: "Is Morris Dees your brother?"

She abruptly disappeared from the chat room. Musta been a network glitch.

I love when people start screaming "RACIST" right and left. Nothing in Domestic Enemies strikes me as racist. Bracken never says or implies that Hispanics are "inferior", etc. But I guess Dee's is on a new funding spree, so he needs to rant about something. Sad that a man who has done much good (by destroying the Klan) has to resort to such tactics as this.

Matt, that's awesome. :D

I hope that someday the Southern Poverty Law Center will despise me too!

That just reminded me to buy a copy...

Enjoyed the first one. Well, if "enjoyment" means started looking for a place to bury some firearms...:D

That's hilarious about the French book about the invasion. Perhaps the SPLC is unaware of the fact that, in some parts of France, what happens pretty frequently would be termed "riots" in Los Angeles. Maybe the book was "racist", but that doesn't mean he was wrong about what was happening.

I would consider that a glowing review.

SPLC had my radio show and our local 2nd amendment group on its watch list for a while.
We all knew then we were a hit.

Southern Poverty Law Center - is its purpose to propagate poverty, or what is its purpose?

Something I found funny. If you click to the SPLC link to read the article there is a nifty feature prominently at the top. You can read that entire article in Spanish. And here I thought that the SPLC was an American organization, wonder why they feel the need to post their articles in Spanish as well as English.

I agree, Boo Hoo. I sorta wanted Reconquista to be a bit more "militaristic" than it was, but it was still a great book.

I sit reading this thread while loading AR-15 magazines. Wonder what the SPLC would think about that.

it is funny BUT

Their deranged followers are dangerous.
SPLC is more akin to a cult then anything else, they needed a new
group of boogie men after their plan to whip up hysteria over a new
"racist skinhead" movement failed....The cult members in the SPLC are immune to reason.
It does not matter to them that all Americans, regardless of race, creed, color
want a secure border it doesn't matter that poor people and minorities are adversely affected by illegal immigration. (Or that Mexicans are treated like virtual slaves)
SPLC is like a serious parasitic illness, it does not realize then when it is done killing the host (the USA) they will be discarded by by whatever replaces it.

Aztlan conspiracy theory — the idea that Mexico is secretly planning a "reconquista" (reconquering) of the seven states of the Southwest

Conspiracy? First of all it's not a conspiracy, it's an open declaration. Secondly, it's not a theory of the far right, but reality. I wonder if this fool realizes that the Aztlan concept is not only admitted, but CELEBRATED. Heck, my old University had a big Mexican mural dedicated to the notion of reconquista. It's not an invention of the far right, it's reality. Just google "Aztlan" and you'll see thirty years worth of references to the notion. Here's a similar mural at UW:

Aztlan%20Mural%20at%20the%20ECC%203-250.jpg

What does that tell you?

I wonder how the SPLC would react to a movement among the squareheads that marked much of the midwest as a "New Deutschland." The notions aren't that far apart. Indeed, the whole chicano/AZTLAN movement is characterized by intense antisemitism, arising from medieval Catholic traditions. These are NOT good people. They're a new breed of racist hate mongers trying to create a new nation that will exclude anyone who isn't one of them.

Thats a great review really...
Reminds me of customer reviews of Atlas Shrugged on swedish webstore...one "review" was from a Social Democrat..."I haven't read this book, but I know its bad because Timbro (Swedish Libertarian think-tank) published it. Waaaaa!".
I've heard that you can judge a man by the enemies he makes. I would be honored to buy you a beer one day :). I've only read the excerpts on your website, and I liked it a lot. Gotta order it.
