The THR Walker Club

Afternoon all,
So the Orphan Army arrived at the Goon's last week so that's a load off of my mind. I know that it will return as a solid shooting revolver when he is done. A neat thing showed up today, a Book on the history of Colt Dragoons. It has some Walker material in it as well and I'm looking forward to a nice long read after work is done. Any of you fine folks read this yet?
regards!

My Walkers are at Goons!

Sent my Walkers off to Mike, can't wait to get them back! Does anyone know of a good leather bandolier holster for them. These Walkers are going hunting this year and that has to be the best way to carry them. Thanks!

Wedge spring

I am a newbie to the wonderful world of Walker's and have an Armi San Marco model that is not in its first flush of youth but still quite lovely.

However, the end of the spring on the wedge has snapped off; my question is, do I need a new wedge or can the spring be replaced? Supplies of Walker spares is very sparse here in England. I am no metal worker and my engineering skills are negligible.

Check out VTIGunparts.com , I've gotten parts for my ASM guns from them, I have seen just springs for sale, may require some work to remove old and replace, but not impossible with basic mechanical skills. I have gotten Uberti and Pieta wedges and with a little hand filing have made them fit, a little cold blue and only you will know they've been altered!:D

Thanks

Thanks, I have tried them but they have sold our and don't expect any more. They said the uberti wedge is slightly smaller but would still work. Is this safe?

The wedges that I got for my ASM's were usually slightly larger and I filed them to fit, I would worry about a loose fit with slightly smaller. Mine weren't Walkers though, one was for an 1861 and the other was for a Wells Fargo 1849

You have a great post lot of good information. I sure like reading THR. I have 2 Walkers myself- 3rd models and a host of other BP revolvers . 1of the Walker I've converted it to a 45BPM.

Got my Walker back from Mike (Goon) this week and I'm anxious to shoot it. Unfortunately it is raining so that will have to wait. Instead I tried something new (to me): I made some paper cartridges to speed up loading at the range.

Note that the cylinder seen in the picture was used to experiment with different powder charges, that is why the bullets are not evenly seated. For this loading session I was going for maximum powder charge, which with the paper cartridges is 55 grains, 60gr. just didn't fit. I used Goex FFFg. Later, I'll roll some lower charges and see which is the most accurate in this pistol. I left the tails long and will cut them shorter as I load the pistol.

Thanks Mike, can't wait to try it out. I intended to deblue both cylinders but in my excitement I got ahead of myself and loaded them, now I have to wait for the sun (and a day off from work) to empty them. Next I'm going to work on the ramrod spring so that the rod won't fall when I shoot the gun. I will still tie a piece of rawhide around the barrel for that "Old School" look but want the option of shooting without the rawhide.

Range Report

Well, no doubt about it, getting the Walker Goonerized was a great idea - I highly recommend it. I fired 36 rounds - 18 from each cylinder- before the rains came and didn't have a single misfire or jam. So much better than the last time I fired the Walker when it took 30 minutes to empty two preloaded cylinders.

Thanks, Mike!

I used the paper cartridges I made last week and they performed flawlessly but the 55 grains of powder I used is apparently not the magic load for this gun - shot grouping was pretty scattered. One thing - you have to remove the cylinder from the gun and tap it on the bench, the paper didn't burn all the way and some was left in the cylinder after firing. Not a big deal since I loaded both cylinders and swapped them after emptying them each time.

Today's project, before and after pics below: I deblued both cylinders and the barrel assembly and dulled the case hardening with steel wool. Loosely following White_Walker's method, I heated the barrel assembly and applied cold blue to it, then lightly rubbed it with steel wool. It is hard to tell in the photos (poor lighting and poor camera) but the blue is thin and a little uneven in the bottom picture. This is what I wanted, it looks like the gun has had a lot of use and should develop a nice patina as I use it.

Now, to send it to Sack Peterson for stag horn grips at which point my hunting Walker will be done. I am ordering 220gr. and 240gr. conical bullets from Kaido Ojamaa; I'll choose the one that works best in this gun and buy a bullet mold from him.

58limited, NICE!! It's great to see folks "make um mine"!!

Great choice of bullets!! I talk with him occasionally, nice guy!! And, the grips will look awesome!!! I want a pic for the gallery!!!

By the way, sometimes I forget to tell folks that " instructions " are on my website should you need them (set screw adjustment and such). Oh, and remember, the spacer (looks like a washer) for the combination spring goes first - UNDER the spring - not above it. It raises the spring off the frame.

Got My Walkers back from Goon!

I got my Walkers back from Goon about a week ago. Man do they feel awesome! Thank you Mike! Unfortunately my wife, kids and I are in the middle of a move. We are squeezed into a small two bedroom apartment for the next 6-8 months until our new house is built. Even worse is the fact that all of my shooting supplies are at the back of a thirty foot storage unit, talk about poor planning! Next Saturday my son and I will try to get to the back of the unit. I can't say enough thanks to Mike these Walkers feel like completely different guns. If you want to see pictures of them Mike has three or four of them on his great site, thanks for that also Mike!:)

Congrats, Holl! On my way to look at Goon's updated website now. Got my first Walker at Christmas and will post pix soon to apply for membership in this fine club!

...to the rarified atmosphere of the THR WALKER club. My girlfriend, the lovely and talented Vicky, had a present under the Christmas tree from "Uncle Berti"...a brand new Uberti WALKER. Here's Vick with the ridiculous, sublime hunk of iron:

More pix to follow. So far, no chance for smoke, but fit, finish, lockup are all what I hoped for. In particular, nice wood with robust figuring that I think will bloom once I strip the "Orange Crush" varnish and oil finish. Thrilled!

Aaaand another couple pics, with a family portrait, 1847 big brother, ASM 1860 with silver grip frame in the middle, and runt Uberti Police bringing up the rear...Unlike Goldilocks, I think they're all "just right"!
