    Then the second loudest sound will be that click when you need it to go boom.

    It depends. If it's pointed at your head, you may not hear it at all. The speed of sound is slower than the muzzle velocity of some rounds, and there is a slight delay inherent in your brain.

    So you might hear a .38 Special or .45ACP, but not a .40 S&W or .357 Magnum.

    Just a tasteless technical clarification...
