Looking at picking up a small thin 9mm. I think I am down to the Beretta Nano or the M&P Shield. What are your thoughts? Am I missing any (not interested in PF-9).

Walther PPS is superb.

Its not a pocket gun, but its thin, reliable, and hits what I'm aiming at.

go nano

I've had my nano a month and love it. Carried it all day today through many stores and malls and almost forgot it was there. I have small hands and it feels very comfy to hold and shoot. I did have 2 failure to ejects in the 1st 300 times I shot it. None in the 2nd 300. Before you decide on a gun, Google it, read the posts and watch the YouTube videos about any pistol your seriously considering.

I don't think you're going to go wrong with either of those two. The best thing you can do is shoot them both somehow. I'm sure one will suit you better than the other. If I were in your spot, I'd be looking at the Ruger LC9 as well.

I would recommend at least handling them both before buying, and of course shooting if at all possible. I was hot after the Nano until I actually saw and handled one. It feels like it sits about an inch taller in the saddle than other 9s, and, for my taste, it's just too tiny and light to make shooting 9mm any fun. But try to touch and feel if at all possible.

For a small concealable gun in a serious caliber such as 9mm or 40, I personally found the Kahr K9 and K40 to be absolutely unbeatable. Ask and learn at the Kahr Talk forums, and of course at the M&P Pistol forum.

Aesthetically, the Nano can hardly be beat--it IS a beautifully finished firearm, and I have NOT shot one. I do own two M&P pistols, so I would tend to grab the Shield based on my positive experience with that line. But again, handle 'em if you can, and shoot 'em if at all possible.

I'm kinda old school, FN Browning HP. This one is a LW and has thin grips on it, I can't believe how much of a difference they make.

Though a little thicker than my Kel-Tec PF9 (an excellent performer, by the way), the new SCCY CPX-2 looks like a potential good choice, too. Were I in the market, I'd definitely want to handle one and try it out if I could.

Thin is nice, but just one feature of the gun as a whole. How it carries, shoots, reloads, what kind of sights, trigger pull weight, lots of other things that can be much more important.

Lots of LEO's carry the small Glocks and thin isn't the issue, it's the grip length and how far it protrudes to their thinking.

Out of those two choices I would go with the Shield, the nano is a little harder to hold, trigger isn't as nice, bore axis is higher. Adding to your question, the Kahr PM/CM 9 or Diamondback 9 fit the bill of thin 9s. The Kahr is far nicer than the Diamondback.

I have and love my Shield, but your hand probably is different than mine. That being said, the Nano didn't fit me as well. My shield is a tack driver with Speer gold dots, feeds perfectly and groups tighter with the JHP than with FMJ. To me this is perfect as the gun's purpose for me is self defense. Last thing, take a look at the Sig P938, I just picked one up, haven't shot it, but man does is feel good in the hand and the Sig is actually smaller than the shield.

You want a thin 9mm try Kel-Tec PF-9 or a Taurus PT-709. I have the KT it is a little snappy to shoot but it is very accurate.

I really like my kahr CW9. It points well and is very easy to carry. I paid just under $400 for mine. Who knows what it will cost you with the curent "frenzy".

I'd go for the Shield. I still read about Nano malfunctions. The bore axis is a big high, too.
Others to be considered:
Sig Sauer P290 RS
Kahrs
Bersa BP9CC
Boberg

It's hard to beat the PPS in reliability and accuracy in a single stack 9. IMO it handles as well as a compact.

Kel-Tec PF-9 has been very good to me through a couple of thousand rounds but I still prefer the Walther.

Shield without a doubt - as the Nano does not have a slide lock lever and without one it will be difficult, time consuming, to clear any jam without one.

And many Nano's jam for the same reasons FTE extract, having been reported vs Shield's very few problems with jamming let alone the Shield's come with a small, but very useful, slide lock lever making clearing of any jams far far faster with usage of the slide lock lever, in the event

OMMV
