I was very fortunate to pull the trigger on the purchase of my Takedown when I did. It was after Sandy Hook, but I wasn't really motivated by that; just happened across what I felt was a good deal in a market where they were relatively hard to find. Of course now all flavors of 10/22's are OOS pretty much everywhere, not just the more popular models.



I've had a plane jane 10/22 before and one of my biggest complaints was the sights. I prefer open sights (for whatever reason) and I always wanted to give those Tech Sights a go and my Lord, they are worth every penny! Just like everyone else here, I highly recommend them.

The other reason I wanted to start this thread is to put a shout out to Jim of JP Grips and Machine who did the threading work on my rifle. I had him cut the barrel down to 16" from 18", retain the front sight and use a special cut for the threads to facilitate the use of the O ring for the Silencerco Sparrow. I found the price reasonable, $135 for all that plus recrown, thread protector and return shipping, and best of all it took only ten days door to door. Compare that to some other well known places like Tornado Tech where the wait last I heard was a YEAR, yeah, quick turnaround indeed. As for the threading itself I've never had a barrel threaded before, but the quality at least to me appears top notch.




Beyond all that I also put in the usual; buffer, auto bolt release and a Volq extractor. I'm glad the newer 10/22's come with the extended mag release, as it's one less part that I have to change. Contemplated trigger work, but I can handle this trigger just fine even with its mushiness.

Should have my suppressor April/May. I anticipate many a squirrel meeting it's end with the use of this rig.

I bought a TD last year when they first came out. I put a Nikon scope on it and I like it well enough, but the bulk does seem to detract a bit from the nature of a take down rifle. I've been thinking about swaping the glass out for either some FO sights, or the Tech Sights and you just make me want to do it even more. I've been planning to have the bolt and trigger worked over, too, but have not gotten around to that yet.

I was considering the Williams Fire Sights but ultimately ended up with the Techs. I prefer a rear aperture and the Techs also give me an extended sight radius. The only negative I can say about the TSs is I sometimes find the front post difficult to locate given the lighting and background, something an FO would clearly be able to negate.

I had a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire on my old 10/22 before I gave it to a friend, maybe it's because of the shooting I do (informal plinking, woodsbumming) I found the bulk too much for my taste on such a small light rifle. He went ahead and put a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot on it. Now that I liked a lot more and if I didn't want irons I think I'd go that route.

Nice rifle, cat. I bought one for my 8 yr. old and considered the Tech Sights but wanted to leave other possibilities open. I chose an EGW rail in hopes it would sit lower than the factory slab to allow using the BUIS but it's a hair tall. Mounted a Nikon 4X I keep as a spare in Warne QD rings and plan to swap between it and an RDS to give him some options.

I'm diggin your set-up with the threaded barrel (jealous 'cause I can't suppress mine here). I did add a ProMag (I know, I know) barrel band and installed it backward to facilitate rail space at 9 and 6 for a QD sling and GSG bipod. Are you planning to sling yours and have you found another good option? I'm seriously considering a second for myself with just sights and strap for true portability.

That's awesome! Why is there no Sparrow in the pic though? I'd love to get a TD and do the barrel the same. If you change your mind on the Trigger and don't want to break the bank, consider a Brimstone Tier 3, worth every penny.

No Sparrow in the pics cause I don't have it yet, stamp should arrive late spring early summer. I have shot it with the Sparrow attached and with CCI standards the rig is pretty quiet, no POI shift either to my surprise.

As for a sling, I'm working on that right now. I'm a little leery drilling for studs in the stock as these aren't regular 10/22 stocks and in case of a screw up (of which I'm most certainly capable) I don't want the hassle of acquiring a replacement. I have found a sling that doesn't require drilling that might fit the bill.

I wasn't going to sling the thing originally, but I decided that the next time there is an Appleseed shoot in Wisconsin I would go, and for that a sling is required.

I have the older beat up non-take down version of exactly what you have: 10/22 carbine, OEM wooden stock that has been smacked around some over the years, tech sights, volq extractor, threaded by jp grips, and stick my TI Stratus on the end of it. I put in a poly bolt stop as well. I also use the CCI standards and it runs perfectly. The bolt is the loudest part of the gun.

I keep debating getting a 1/9 twist barrel, have jp grips thread that and source an front sight base, and running the 60gr aguila SSS rounds. Then I decide I have better things to spend money on since the CCI standards are just fine.

Yeah, CCI standards are great, if you can find them. Biggest mistake I made was to not include them in my ammo acquisition plan I had going for the last couple of years. Plenty of Mini Mags and Blazer, only 300 standards though. Didn't think I'd buy a can though so that was never a consideration.

What do you mean by "O ring"? Wouldn't you just thread the barrel, and screw the Sparrow on?

The Sparrow doesn't need any special threading to work, any .5x28 tpi will do, but the Sparrow also contains an O ring engagement feature which keeps the can from unscrewing. For that feature, either a special cut or one of the many adapters Silencerco sells is needed.
