picked this little gem up this winter at a local gun auction. 1947 vintage Remington 22 caliber Model 121 Fieldmaster with Routledge smooth-bore barrel. The last 12" of barrel the bore widens out to just about 410. Only about 2000 of these were ever built, between 1932 and 1955. They were special order only.

Believe it or not, they were designed for indoor trap shooting like in a barn. Remington even produced special traps and mini clay birds called MoSkeetO. Their history is very interesting.

Now, is it a rifle or a shotgun!?! Beats me... Clue: only sight on the gun is a stainless bead at the muzzle... ;)

here's the Routledge nomenclature on the specially designed 22 caliber barrel. 22 LR crimped front shot-shells only...

Legally since it has a smoothbore (unrifled barrel) designed to fire shotshells it is a shotgun, just as the Marlin bolt action smoothbore "garden gun" made for pest control with .22 mag shotshells is legally a shotgun.

(My first glance though would make me ask what happened to the rear sight, since I have only seen those as rifles.) That is one beautiful fieldgun I must add, and I bet it patterns much better than my rifled barrel Taurus pump does with shotshells. (added)

My dad talked a lot about that exact thing. He used them in Boy Scouts (the good ol' days!) I was sure he knew what he was talking about, but... Well, that's the first one I've ever seen! Very Cool!

here's some official info right out of the Remington history book I own. A little risqué for the 30's, I do believe, but nothing like today...

the Routledge Girls showing "off" with the MoSkeetO trap machines and rifles...
