This is what happens when you swear off old .22s

The Remington 511, 513 and the 521 all use the same magazine. Last Christmas I handed down my 511 to my grandson. I had two original factory magazines which I kept as kids tend to lose magazines so I bought a few of these after market magazines. They worked just fine. Finding original Remington magazines can be a challenge and the few I saw a few years ago were $50 and up. The 521T is one sweet rifle so enjoy it. :)

Thanks!

Well, the initial sand-down is done and it revealed an unfortunate surprise-
IMG_0480.jpg

A nasty z-shaped crack hiding under the old grime and varnish.
My first instinct is to drill some small holes at the end of each vein, fill them in with wood epoxy, sand smooth, and stain the whole thing dark cherry to cover up the mess.
But...I'm open to suggestions if anyone has a better idea. I still think the stock is salvageable, structurally, but it might never be a beauty queen. o_O

Well, obviously there is some oil soaked into and leaching out of that crack which will probably interfere with any filler or adhesive. I think the first step will be to try and draw it out with mineral spirits.
Then, I'm thinking a penetrating epoxy, maybe even just plain old liquid superglue?

Well, here she is after a good acetone bath, epoxy, a coat of mahogany tinted Danish oil, three coats of BLO, sanding, polishing, rebluing, and more polishing-

I ended up going with a Redfield 75 rear sight and Lyman 17 up front. Couldn't find a Lyman 57 rear at a price I was willing to pay.

Was hoping to shoot it this weekend, but I'm still waiting for the rear base screws to come in, so I just mocked it up for beauty shots....

Overall, Im pretty happy with how it turned out so far, considering I'm into it for not quite twice the initial price (not including labor, of course). I'll have to reserve final judgement for when I get the sights permanently mounted. We'll see if the groups are worth the effort, lol.

Was trying to leave the gunshow empty-handed today after work. I REALLY wasn't trying to leave with another old project .22....

-Thought it was a Remington 511 at first. So did the seller- that's what it had on the tag anyway, lol. $200 and a handshake later and I had another project on my hands. Turns out it was a 521T "Junior Special." Barrel code dates it to 1948.

Missing the original Lyman peep sight and magazine- both probably scalped on Ebay- but at least someone did find a usable elevator sight for it. Needs a little TLC, but there is some really nice tiger-striping hiding under the grime and the bore is perfect.

Okay, fine, one last project .22.
I swear! 😁
Good Buy!
