I was at my local gun shop doing the paperwork on a new Ruger Precision Rifle when I spotted a beautiful pistol in the display case. I asked to see it and the clerk said it was one of the nicest 1911s he'd ever seen. I looked it over and it was a two-tone Les Baer full-size 1911 in .45 ACP. No idea what model, but it had a stainless frame, blued slide, ambidextrous safety, target sights, and was in perfect condition with no imperfections. I asked the price and was told $1700. Most I've ever paid for a pistol was $900. In searching online, I believe it is either a Concept III model, which sells for around $2800, or the Boss model, which is $3500 new.

I have a full-size Colt 1911 A1 in .45acp, a Kimber Crimson Carry in .45acp, a Remington R1 Limited in .40 S&W, and two Tisas 1911s in 10mm. I have no use for this pistol. But I was blown away by the craftsmanship and quality of the firearm.

I was just on Gunbroker looking for a similar used Les Baer pistol and the closest comparable pistol was a used Les Baer Custom 2-tone with an idiot mark and other wear and tear for $1950. Seems like the local pistol is quite a bargain.

I would love to buy a new Les Baer in 10mm, but those start at around $3k, so I could buy this one, then flip it on Gunbroker, and take the profit and put it towards a new 10mm. Or I could just buy the local pistol and know that I have a very nice 1911 that was a bargain.

I did see that the Dan Wesson 10mm 1911s are much more affordable at under $2k new... How do they compare to the Les Baer?

If it’s stainless, it’s the Concept model. The Boss has a hard chromed frame. At that price, it’s likely the Concept, which are Baer’s “value series”. They are outstanding pistols.

Here are my Monolith Heavyweight and American Handgunner. The Handgunner is chrome with the blued slide.

$1700! that’s a nice price if it had not been all shot up. LB has like a 500 round break in period. so they might have done all the work for you!

they are too tight for my liking. But still COOL ad snot

Maybe you should consider buying it and getting rid of the Kimber, Remington and Tisas.
Nope. The Kimber was my late father's only carry pistol. The Colt was his as well and was in the process of being customized. The Remington is in .40 S&W and is a fun range toy. The two Tisas are in 10mm and I finally got them to run well. Not worth trying to sell them for maybe $350 each.

Heartily recommend. The LB is a better built pistol than the DW, which are pretty well made too, but we’re talking about a gap none the less and it is reflected in the price.

Need has little to do with the matter but I should think flipping fails to net enough profit to be worthwhile while keeping it is its own advantage. I too would ditch the Tisas twins to afford the Baer if need be then find that second shooter in 10mm. A Wesson would be fine but the Baer may convince you otherwise.

Once in a blue moon the gun gods shine on gun guys and a real steal can be found. $1,700 is not a bad price for a used Baer. It isn’t a steal per se, but you saw new guns run $2,500+ so they’re not cheap. I would have bought it right away, but I have a soft spot for the 1911’s from Les. (My Ultimate Master .45 ran me north of $5,000.)

I stumbled upon a used Baer Thunder Ranch with a $1,000 tag sitting in the used gun case at a local Sportsman’s Warehouse last year. That was one day those gods certainly had me on their radar. 🙏

They can easily shoot like this, with 230 gr generic hardball as well as hand loads. :D

Hopefully you’ll get another crack at it. 👍

Stay safe.

I did the checkering and the frame to slide fit on that gun. On the underside of the slide I stamped the full serial # of the gun, followed by a "W" which stood for "Williams," my last name.

My signature is right below the words "custom pistol."

how many LB you estimate you
worked on?

I mean, I’m just me but if I had the brace of 1911s you already have, I would likely want to be rid of a few of them.

I personally would let both Tisas and the Kimber go. I like those 40 cal R1s and think they are a very neat and uncommon gun.

Viola!

The Baer is yours.

Remember, Les is more.

;)

I’m on a mission to get one 1911 from the big boys before I’m broke, which isn’t going to take long. So far I have the following

Nighthawk Chairman Long Slide
Dan Wesson DWX
Dan Wesson Specialist
Wilson Combat EDC X9
Ed Brown special Forces
Derr Precision Custom 1911
Palmetto State Dagger

Next on the depth chart is a Les Baer. That should complete it. I hope. 😆
