The old style carry-handle mounted 3x and 4x scopes always interested me. I realize that ACOG's and other optics are probably better products, but I'm still curious about the quality and ruggedness of the older Colt scopes.

Who made them?
What versions and options (if any) were available?
Were the optics decent quality?
Was it reasonably weather-proof?

Any help you can offer is appreciated.

the "real deal" 3 or 4 x colt carry handle scope is an excellent investment

the chinese copies fail to run the box

Harry,

I'd love to have more information! I know nothing about these scopes and would like to know what to look for, and what questions to ask when looking to make a buy.

Thanks

Sorry Harry BUT; I own a 3x Real Colt scope I've had since mid 80's. Yes it might hold it's value (thinking about selling mine for $300 since I don't use it in last 10 years) but the optics are not 'bright' with the objective lens being tiny, and the reticule is kinda hard to find at dusk or dawn or dark days for that matter-forget the night. For the money they are worth get a good handle mount Pic rail, and an Aimpoint OR a low power variable like the Weaver 1-3 (or better yet a Leupold 1.5-6 for a few $ more)or other quality low power scope.:)

I have a Colt 4x mounted on my AR, use it for coyote hunting, works fine but there are better ones by far out there,

Colt scopes......

I have one of these on my HBAR A2. It is a good scope but not the best thing I own. Has the standard Duplex cross hairs and is not all that bright. What I do like is the Bullet Drop Comp. Mine seems to be dead on. Just dial in the distance and it drops the bullets right in there. I had no idea that these were valuable. Mine has never been dis-mounted from my rifle. I like it and use in much more than the iron sights. :)

The Colt scopes were made by Hakko. I have a current production Hakko 4x but need to sight it in. The optics in my scope are clear and it seems to have pretty good light gathering. Overall it feels well made. I got mine earlier this year from Personalsecurityzone.com, the only place I found that has them.
