THR members in NE Indiana?

Adam, yes, my grandfather's!:D Unforunately that is no longer.:(

The gun shoppes that I remember in Bloomington before I became a Class 1 (you have to be 21 to have a FFL) were on the smallish side, often grafted unto pawn shops or antique stores. Maybe someone will more current experience can help you.

Lots of spoiled kids from the suburbs wearing sandals pretending to be angry over "injustice" while they listen to REM in their BMWs.

One more good family (I mean my family :D ) could be nice addition to this town I hope. Little more "normal" people around...remember...."Even the smallest person can change the course of the future".

I live in Avon which is just west of Indianapolis.

I will be at the 1500 on Friday, so if you see a someone in a tan Molon labe hat say Hi.

I was born and raised in Madison County....

but am pretty far away at the moment.

El Tejon (or Bloomingtonites):

Does "Smaltz's Department Store" still exist?
The gun department manager, Guy, was very entertaining back in the 1960's.:)

Adam: By all means, Help balance the Mastercard Marxists out by moving to Bloomington and being sane.:D It's a nice area, especially when the students are away in Summer.

There are (or used to be?) good caving opportunities in the Garrison Chapel Valley near Bloomington.

Indiana is a much more diverse state than many folks imagine.;)

Schmaltz's is no more; closed right after I left for East Coast after undergrad.:( My brother and I used to ride our bikes downtown in the summer when staying at my Grandmother's.

Great place, especially the enormous gun displays and all the stuffed critters upstaris that had been shot locally. I have a picture of me with the bear somewhere.

Maybe that's why I do not tremble at the thought of bears in the woods? I learned early that the proper thing to do is to shoot them.

ALWAYS ask permission before you go caving! The best caves are private property and the owners get aggravated and are well-armed. I remember a couple of fratty boys that discovered this the hard way:eek:

Thanks everyone for responding.

Perhaps we need to organize a Indiana THR chapter and some shoots.

Yeah, definitely! Does anyone own a chunk of property with a range that would be suitable for such a thing?

Fort Wayne here. DNR has a couple of ranges in NE Indiana. There is a nice outdoor range at Tri-County. The Huntington Range which has been pretty much the pits is being re-done to be more on the order of what Tri-County has. I think is to be ready by summer. Maybe one of those two places?

I love that idea.

I hear Freedom, Indiana (can it get any better?) has a newly opened range, though I don't know whether they're private or not. Or even how big it is.

My dad lives very close to Freedom and has about 40 acres. I'd offer up a date at his place but his land isn't laid out too well for shooting. Not for large groups anyway. The only realy backstop in the hill at the north end of the property. Unfortunately, the house sits on that hill so we'd be shooting at it.

Johnson County has a range at Camp Atterbury. Not great, but it's public and the RO on Sundays is a great guy. Always remembers me and my husband and teases my hubby when I outshoot him. :D

I'd love it if we can get this done.

I'll be at the 1500 too. Look for the slightly chubby gal in an OHIO National Guard hat and the tall skinny guy next to her (Jack Sprat and his wife! :D ). I'm bring a newbie too. Another female shooter I hope to add to the ranks.

I live about 20 miles south of South Bend.

El Tejon, I spent 4 long years in W. Lafayette a long time ago.

As for a shoot...there's a Metallic Silhouette range about 35 miles south and slightly west of South Bend. They have shoots the first Sunday of every month during the summer. Very relaxed atmosphere and you don't have to be a member. Great facilities and it's cheap to shoot.

If anybody's interested, I'll bring the barbecue grill and drinks and we can have a shoot this summer.

If you want something more "open", we have a farm with a pond that has maybe 3 acres of mowed grass. You can camp, build fires, and shoot all you want. Also, there's a really nice sporting clays range about a mile away.

Sad to think......

that Smaltz's is no more:( .

As El Tejon says, there was a fine display of guns and outdoor stuff there.:)

I suppose the old National Guard range outside Frankfort has been closed as well?

My brother and I used to attend matches there, and practice as well.

What about the rifle range at Putnamville, part of the correctional facility, IIRC??

Just thinking about all that Hoosier 'gun culture' is soothing to one who dwells in the land of rampant hoplophobia.:banghead:

Living here in Jay County - about an hour south of Ft. Wayne and about 35 minutes or so from Muncie. Shoot at the Muncie Pistol Club indoor range and also at the Monroe Township Conservation club just outside of Muncie.

I was born in (and have relatives in) Fort Wayne, so I'm through there regularly.

Moondancer my brother-in-law is from Coldwater.

I start missing that corn country up there around memorial day. This time of year I don't miss it at all
:D

I've hunted near the State Farm (or whatever they're calling that prison now). The guy who owned the property says he hears the gunfire often, but he thinks the range is closed to the public.

Oh, and I live near Kcustom45, FWIW.

I live in West Lafayette. If you see that deadly looking banker or a HSLD fella in your econ class, it is probably me :D

Thanks, Cordex......

The Indiana State Rifle team shot on the Putnamville "State Farm" range from time to time, at least in the 1960's & '70's, but I'm not aware of who actually controlled/operated it.

There was a very steep-walled gravel pit near the parking area where, at the age of 14. I was introduced to a Ruger Standard .22 pistol which some team members were using to 'plink' at floating Sycamore seed balls with.

It was a case of love at first sight ;) .

Well, we aren't organized yet, but I think I will put together a e-mailing list from this thread, then we will be getting closer to organized...

Just make sure I'm on the mailing list!

I keep seeing these other "THR shoot" posts and am jealous, so let's see what we can do. NE Indiana can bring in South Michigan and NW Ohio (all the soon to be happy CCW people from Ohio can come too).

Could be a good time!
