Beautiful NMA Pantheragem! Love the color-cased frame, almost the point of jealousy; was that the factory finish?
Both of mine came with a pretty rich deep bluing; and still do, except at wear points where edges on the frames. Moreso on the 5-1/2" barrelled Rem; I really need to buy it a proper holster :banghead: and get it out of the Safariland "duty holster" that it's presently 'wearing', which is built/molded for a 6" S&W N-frame and usually carries (very snugly) my 629!

Now I know why my frames are just blued instead of color-cased - it's because of what a cheap SOB I am! Paid $180 (on sale) 2-3 years ago for my 8" NMA, and $220 (reg price) for the 5-1/2" NMA last year.
I'm kinda ambivalent about checkered grips on revolvers; so for the cost of a color-cased frame, I bought my 3 spare cylinders and had beer money (12-pack of Bud Light) left over! This penny-pinching attitude is why I also haven't bought any conversion cylinders and therefore don't have any pictures in the conversion thread.
EDIT: And probably why my 5-1/2" NMA lives in an S&W 6" N-frame holster and my N-frame is in an Uncle Mike's pancake!

(Then I'd have to buy .45LC dies for the rock-chucker, and.....)

They seem to go on sale frequently. I believe mine was $299 when I got it. I used some sort of online coupon too. Not that that's "cheap" by any means, but I didn't pay full price. I love the conversion cylinder, dropped right in without any tinkering.

I am so torn between waiting for Buffalo Arms to get the 4.5" Uberti '62 Police back in stock, and just ordering another 5.5" Pietta Remington NMA .44 from Cabela's.

The Siren that lives in a drawer in the dark recesses of my shop is singing again. Yes that aluring but ultimatel evil Dremil Tool is tempting me yet again. This time it is Dualist1954's You Yube on the NMA where in he meantions widening the capping ports in the cylinder using the 1/4 inch sanding drum on the evil electronic gun eating device.

Having fumbled away trying to get those little bitty #10s on the nipples and found no way to wedge my straightline capper in I am considering doing the modification.

Couple or three questions;

Is cold blue going to look odd for touching up the sanded edges?

Are there downsides to the modification such as increased danger of chainfire or increased danger of caps falling off while firing or increased chances of cap debris entering the action?

I notice that when Bill Ruger attempted to improve the NMA by mating one with a Blackhawk that he put huge capping windows on the ROA. WHere the windows opened up on any of the original NMA "in the day"?

THe grip shape is growing on me though it ain't a Colt Navy. Balance is still something to get used to and I begin to see why shooters are liking the 5.5 inch barreled guns, though I hate the idea of giving up barrel length.

I suppose that the biggest danger in digging out the drimel for this project is then it will be out where it might leap on other projects while I am not paying attention. WOnder what Pecan Grips might be like......

1858 Pietta 5 1/5 barrel, howell conversion (have yet to use it baught it used dunno what ammo exactly to use, 44 spl cowboy loads kinda fit but the rims overlap, and 45 colt does not fit?) mad the grips my self out of some white derlin scrap i found layn around. The knife is my grandpa's knife he gave me before he passed, the stag grip was broken and the tang needed work so me being cheap i used scrap aluminum and brass that i found layn around work and put it alot of fileing and sanding. the pistol has recently became a stubby that is not yet complete I will post picks of it when finished.

No 44spl!!

Hello,

DO NOT shoot 44spl in that conversion cylinder!!!

It is almost certainly a 45 Colt cylinder, though you should contact the manufacturer to make sure.

It is possible that your 45 Colt ammo is a bit on the fat side... I would see if a different brand fits, and also clean the cylinder.

Nerver chamber a round you are not absolutely sure is is the correct caliber; if you care about your fingers and eyes that is...

I am aware of that I sliped the 44 in cuz i measured with a caliper and then measured the 44 for comparison, I asked my neighbor for some 45 colt that he fires out of his SAA and it didnt fit. I am more than likely going to just buy a kirst anyhow, and next gun show im taking it with me to check different ammo in it.

Sounds like you have one of Howell's 45 ACP conversions

'58 Navy Cylinder Re-Insertion Problems

Any of you fine Remington Affectionados ever have this problem and if so, how did you deal with it:

I just got around to cleaning up my new Cimarron 1858 Navy.
Had a very difficult time getting the cylinder back in ( I've dealt with numerous Remingtons of the years and know that you need to have the gun on half-cock before putting it back in)
Finally had to carefully reach in on the left side and nudge the hand in before fully engaging the cylinder.
I'm thinking next time I strip the revolver down, that a bit of polishing on the side of the hand might help matters. What thinkest thou????

I sometimes have to rotate my cylinder clockwise a little, to get it to line up with the pin.
I also, sometimes lower the loading rod so the ram goes into the bottom chamber, and then rotate it CW a hair.
I can't do it anywhere near as fast as Clint.
I can do it faster with an Uberti than with my Pietta.
I think the Pietta cylinder pin needs a bit of a chamfer on the tip.

Hmm, white Delrin grips. I have a piece of 1.75" diameter Delrin rod. I may have to split it with the bandsaw and see if I can make some fake ivory grips for my NMA and Ruger Speed Six.
Maybe even make one for the DW .357. I wish I had a set of broaches, to make the square hole easier.
Hmm, maybe even fake ivory grip for the GP100 and Redhawk.
Then there's my New Blackhawk .44 special that is supposed to come in tomorrow.

Ya know, I made a round, black Delrin handle for my brother's Chinese chef's knife, when the wooden one split. Turned it up on the metal lathe, with sharp carbide tools and high speed and feed. Even gave it grooves for grip. I may have to see if I have any O-rings that will fit the grooves, for even better grip.

I had ordered a howells 45 colt conversion from buffalo arms and recieved a 45acp cylinder. I was going to exchange it until I found some suitable ammo at Dicks. Its Ultramax 45r2. 230gr lrn, its like 900 something fps and it is only $45/250rds

Hey Pantheragem, I don't spose you'd mind takin a ruler to yer grips and tellin me what the lines per inch are in your checkering would ya ?
That is absolutley beautifull and i'm sold. I'm gonna checker my grips when my '58 gits here.
Looks like some fine shotgun checkering on your grips.
I LIKE it !!! :D

This talk of derlin rods is interesting. Is there some inexpensive plastic that can be shaped and polished to give the look of Mother Of Pearl?

I goggled MOP grips and even the faux ones seem a bit steep.

Just wanted to know.

-kBob

Don't know. I have a set of fake MOP grips for a Colt Detective Special that I no longer need. I need to find them and sell them.
