.454 ya say huh? I got no quams 'bout addin a new mold to the arsenol.I'll pick up the phone in the morn and git my lgs to order it for me.
I need to wait 'til my grambaby is done vacationin here tho before i can do any castin.
I been waitin to be able to fire up my furnace so's i can git that bolt spring i made for my no name .36 finished too.
'spect i'll be doin the spring and castin boolits all in the same day

As for the wood. I hope they aint oil soaked. I wanna be able to checker 'em next to the fire place this winter.
Oh well, maybe i'll have to whittle up some new ones if so.

Jist checked..nope, it's a .220gr .456 conical.
Oh well, as i told splattergun, i'll jist hafta git the .454 also.
Are you sayin Jay the you found the 200 gr. .454 conical to perform better than the 200gr, .454 round ball ?

 

I ran about 1500 round ball loads, the first 100 .451", the rest .454" and then started running the conicals through it to the tune of about 500, at that point I figured it was "broke in". With 30 grain loads of both Pyrodex P and Goex 3fG accounting for the powder that I used. The 30 grains comes from using the 30 grain dump tube on my cylindrical Powder Flask until I purchased my Remington Powder Flask which also has the 30 grain tube on it. I tried using a scale and matching charges and being all dedicated and stuff but found that it simply didn't matter that much in comparing the results.

After all that on a good day with just double digit temperatures (I say this because shooting here in Southern Nevada when the temperature hits triple digits makes some strange crap happen with most firearms, modern day and black powder) I can shoot two inch groups with my Remington 5.5" 1858 using 200 grain .454" Conicals and dropped 30 grain Goex fffG.

Oh yeah, that .454" round ball don't weigh in at 200 grains, depending on lead mixes and individual variations it runs anywhere from 146 to as much as 149 grains.

When ya git a chance, would ya post up the Lee item number on that conical mold ? I like to give the item number when i have my lgs order molds for me. Eliminates any confusions.

Hi Jim,

I got an E Mail sales flyer from "Track of the Wolf" showing that they are selling their Lee 6 cavity Round Ball .454" mold for $54.99. If you go on the Lee Website and browse their molds you should be able to dig up the conical bullet molds easy enough.

They are showing a .456" mold and a .450" mold in conical bullets. I scored mine from Midway, checking the numbers it appears that it is a .456". I measured the bullets cast with it with my micrometer and it is showing .454" though. Go figure.

I allready have this mold so i think i'll give this boolit a shot before i buy the other mold.
I also allready have a .452" 200gr conical i'll hafta give a try.

Is it expected that a cast bullet shrink below the marked diameter after cooling ?

 

In the way back a buddy had a Nickled NMA that he shot his 200 grain SWC bullets for his .45ACP in LOADED BACKWARDS. As he cast them himself I do not know what lube he used. Though all I have have a hard blue smokeless lube on them I am tempted. I suppose I could scrape out the blue stuff and smear on bore butter or cisco if I wanted to. Our shooting at the time was mostly a 15 yards as that was the most polular range for casual shooters at the renge our club ran and at that range the backwards .45 ACP SWC bullets cut neat wad cutter like holes in the targets and cardboard backing.

Not sure what his load was though it had to b BP or Pyro at the time and I seem to recall he loaded from a 30 grain flask.

Now that I think about it I may drop him an e-mail and ask about it. Have not seen him in a decade or so and just found out this morning he owns a Upick Grape farm on his old place. Could be a "sign".

Hi Jim,

Some shrinkage might be the answer, also Lee's molds sometimes come out over or under just a tad. So between the two, I am lucking out to get .454" Conicals.

Just had a taller front sight installed on my Euroarms 58. The sight is loose enough to be moved with my fingers. Any ideas ( rational ) to tighten up the dovetail??

 

Nine just stake it with a small nail set or some other pointed object. Of course you will want to get it where you want it before you get out the hammer.

 

I nail set the flat of the dove cut. It makes a small 'crater's on the flat that holds the site in place by friction. The rear site on my Zastava used to drift till I did this. This allows the site to be adjusted but nothing shows.

i have never seen a short barrel uberti ,58 with a case hardened frame but the thing fits the box perfectly so it must be real...lol...

tomarrow is payday and i'll have it paid off!!!!

'58 question.

I jist bot this little brasser '58 for my wife.
I originaly thot it was 5.5"er 'till i set it with the rest o' the 'family' and discovered it is actualy a 6.5" er.
I 'spect this gun was a kit because i found the original assembly instructions in the case it came in.
Was this length Bbl only indicative to kit guns or was the 6.5"er normal production also ?
The 6.5"er is the brasser in the middle.
( pretty sweet little group there huh? )

 

Well Piettas steel frame in 2003 featured a 6 5/8 inch barrel on the .36 so I am guessing that was pretty much standard.

Although Uberti's were 7 1/2 inch.

My guess is barrel length proves nothing. I would say if it were a kit gun it might not have proof marks as atleast some of the colt type brasser kits did not.

Well looking at your photo your does seem to have proof marks on the frame.

Looks like the grip frame is smaller on the .36 than it is on the .44s. I understand this ws true of the originals but may be wrong. Do the grips from the brasser fit either of your .44s and vice versa?

FOr that matter is the cylinder the same lenth and diameter?

That little cutie is looking neater and neater the more I gaze at its picture.

Euroarms guns have smaller grips than Pietta or Uberti.

I should have meantioned that she is indeed another Italian no namer.
And yes she does have proof marks so i spose that rules out a kit gun ?
Also, she's got a manufacture date, (AC) '77.

The grip frame and grips are indeed a bit smaller and not as 'hump backed' as the other two as can be seen in the pic. She fits Janet's hand real nice.

I'll hafta compare the cylinders if i git time this evening.
( buildin a kitchen island right now and then i'm gonna mount my steel steed and go haggle over that Euro Colt Saa clone with the offset hammer and crookwards nipples )

I hafta agree with ya Bob, she truely is a bit of a sweetie
And HEAVY, she is heavier in the hand than the 7.5" brasser and the steel 5.5"er.i 'spect that the brass used 35 years ago was bit more dense than todays'.
Her trigger is CRISP, and a bit too much 'right now'.
I cleaned er all up and since that feller took some Brasso to 'er i sat down and polished 'er entire surface proper with some Flitz. She looks far better than the pics exhibit.
