Threading Saiga barrel

So as the title says I want to thread my Saiga 7.62x39 for a flash hider. I don't have the necessary tools so wonder if there is someone near me (central IL) that could do it for a reasonable price. The cost of quality tooling would probably cost more than hiring it out. I remember seeing somewhere, maybe the Saiga forum, where someone would lend the tools if shipping is paid. I just wonder if I'd get a dull die to use in that case though.

Not crazy about the idea of shipping it to get it done but that could be an option if cost effective.

JF - I havent done this, so I cant offer any experience. However, I've been considering doing the same on my Saiga. If we could rent a kit (I've seen that option too, somewhere...), we could split the cost and/or meet up and do them together - sometimes 2 heads better than one, ya know. I live/work around Peoria, btw.

That's definitely a possibility. I'm an ex-salvage machinist, NAFTA took care of that as it became cheaper to throw parts away as opposed to fixing them, so I know what's involved. I just don't have the tools anymore since I sold them to pay for a good stethoscope and scrubs for my new career. Heck, I don't even have a workbench with a good vice anymore. I gotta change that for sure.

In that case, you sir, are much better equipped than I, at least from the experience standpoint :). I have a small-ish vise and workbench in my garage, but nothing crazy machine shop wise. Looks like you can buy the tools on Dinzag arms (I keep hearing good things about him, but have yet to order anything there), all told about $75 + muzzle break. For that, Im tempted to just buy the stuff.... the rental kits I did find (.223 only) were like $60/week...

Google Dinzag; they offer tools and advice for saiga barrel threading.
 
So in doing a little more research I've found a YouTube video of a fella doing his barrel, pretty easy and straight forward. I've also found that some Saiga's already have the threads. I'll have to cut the shroud back first anyway. I really hope I lucked out.

Wow thanks. I learned something!!

I'm glad I didn't just run out to the shop and run a M14x1 die on the barrel! I didn't know until he first started that they are LEFT HAND THREADS. I'll need to buy that die.

Well I went ahead and cut off my barrel shroud tonight. Not my lucky night I guess, as my Saiga was not one of the chosen ones that arrive with threaded barrels. Guess it gives me a good project to do next month, as I've already allocated/spent my shooting budget for March lol. Dinzag, here I come.

Well Ben, when I finally get around to doing mine I'll rent or buy the tooling from you to help offset your cost. It's not a tough job just keep the die straight (using a pilot helps this), use cutting oil and back the die off often to break the chips.

I pondered the idea of seeing if "there be threads under tharrrr" on my Saiga, but don't really want to risk HAVING to [therefore] fix it by threading it. Isn't it as easy as getting the front sight block off to check it?

I thought so. I had a hunch it might have threads. I cut around the shroud with a pipe cutter then down each side with a cut off wheel and pried the two halves off. I cut a little deep on one side and got into the threads but they'll be ok with a 60° thread file (still have those). There was an epoxy like substance holding it on requiring me to split and pry the shroud off. Wire wheeled that off and all looks well.

Is it difficult to charge one handed with the BCM medium latch or is the large needed for single hand manipulation? My scope sits back too far for convential charging so was considering going with a BCM to replace my current Colt charging handle with Badger latch.
 
The check list is actually near the bottom of the page. Mine was threaded and has all the features listed there.
