Three Rifle Cartridges You Wish You Had?

I've got 22 rifle calibers now, and some of those are multiple rifles.

One new (to me) caliber I'd like to look into would be:

6.8 SPC II for putting together a suppressed NV capable pig carbine

I like classic European cartridges, despite not owning any yet. (unless you count 2 1/2" 16 ga.)

1. 9.3 x 72 or 74R, slung under two 16 ga. barrels.

2. 6.5 Mannlicher-Schoenauer in a butterknife bolt handled Mannlicher stocked rifle with a claw mounted Zeiss, Schmidt & Bender, or Swarovski scope.

3. ....and 1 American cartridge, and rifle for it. A Win. 95 in .405 Win. Big medicine.

Since we are wishing:

.338 Lapua
.50 BMG
20x102mm Vulcan

No practical use for any of them at the moment, or I would do something about it. (well, at least the .338.)

7x57 Mauser in an unaltered Mexican M1936

6.5x54 in a pre-war Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine with an aperture rear sight -- one like this would do nicely:

MSCarbine.jpg

.30 US Carbine in a cherry ex-military M1 -- I've traded off several and have been having buyer's remorse

(An Stg-44 in 7.92x33 Kurz would be nice, but I'd have to move to another state for anything that fun.)

30 Carbine and 45-70 would be cool, both come in fun rifles. For my third maybe I'll go with a 6.5 Grendel. I don't have an AR in anything but 223/556 and it might be nice to step up the horsepower a bit in that platform and have a viable deer hunting AR without having to go up to an AR10.

I don't have a desire for any more rifle cartridges.

But I really would like to play with .454 Casull in a lever action with a 16" barrel. Specifically a stainless all-weather Marlin/Ruger. I wish they'd hurry up and make one!

Only 3 cartridges, thats tough to narrow down, but 6.5x55 both in a modern shorter and original military configurations. Another m1 grand in 06 or an MBA 7.62x51, of courses each would need a modern shorter bolt action. A 280 Remington bolt action, because it's an almost perfect balance between 270 win and 3006 Springfield.
Find a mauser 98 action I just picked up a 20" 6 .5 Swede barrel today.

I had to think a bit, but there really isn't much I want at this point. However,

A 250 Savage (or a 257 Creedmoor if someone will standardize it) in an accurate, bolt gun like a Tikka
A .30 Carbine in a reliable M1 Carbine
A Marlin 444 Rifle in 444

I don't even shoot the rifles I have now, so really don't need any more!

Playing along, though...

I'm surprised but gratified to see the .257 Weatherby mentioned so much. I had one, got rid of it, and wish I had it back. I wouldn't turn down a fancy Mark V Deluxe with all the trimmings - blueprinted action, upgraded wood, etc. - though I wouldn't want to pay for it!

I don't actually own a centerfire lever gun. I really ought to have a '73 in .30-30, although a '94 in .32-40 would fancy my tickle.

And an old British single - or even a #1 worked over by a top gunsmith - in .450 Express (not nitro, but BPE) would be a real hoot.

It's not about owning more guns for me, I can aford that.

It's feeding them that's getting hard.
That seems to be the way it goes with a lot of things. My health insurance where I worked paid for the births of my kids, but then I had to keep working at that awful place for the next 18 years to feed those kids. And unlike handloading to feed my guns, growing a vegetable garden didn't reduce our weekly grocery bill by much.
And what about my new pickup-truck? Gas is almost 4 bucks a gallon now. By the time I get that truck paid-off, I might not be able to afford the gas for it!
On the other hand I'm old, so my kids are grown and off on their own, I live where I don't have to drive very far (if at all) to shoot, and I probably have enough handloading components and equipment to see me through this "crises" - maybe enough to see me through period.;)

another vote for a 375 cheytac, it would be fun to learn how to properly use it. other than that I have been able to accumilate all that I have wanted so far.

maybe a 30-378 weatherby, it is on my list but I havent seen one in any stores new or used, I dislike buying anything I cannot look at before hand

African safari double rifle in one of the lesser African magnums… probably 375 H&H

Garand 30-06. My grandaddy carried one in Korea. As a young Kentucky boy fresh from the farm they gave him an International Harvester and said it was the most fitting thing available. He didn’t have it long, he was injured and got put on duty of driving vehicles… mail truck, ambulance, etc. I don’t need THAT rifle, but one like it would be nice.

and of course a 50bmg. I would choose the Barrett m82 if I was not able to get a ma deuce.

30 Remington in a Model 8
35 Remington in a Marlin 336
256 Win Mag in a Marlin 62
I killed my first few deer with a 62 in 256 winmag. I now also have the 62 in 30 carbine. They are fun guns, but they are not worthy of their price. I do want to gather up one more and build the 357 mag that never came to be. I would do a 222 as well if I found another action to build on, but it would be WAY down the list. Those guns are not easy to work on and rebarreling one would surely be expensive and aggravating.

They are really rare. So is the Model 56, 57, and 57M. If I could find one and afford it, I would never ever modify it. I hardly ever see a 62 anywhere and when I do see one, it is in 30 Carbine. Luckily, brass is not a problem for either cartridge.
