The Teuller drill established that the average officer could not recognize the average edged weapon threat at 21 feet, draw, and fire two shots COM before contact was made.

Neither here nor there, these days; it is falling out of favor in training circles.

I'll be curious to see all the times posted.

I saw a demonstration of this where the instructor (with the knife) charged the kid (student) while demonstrating the concept. The kid got this oh #@[email protected]# look on his face and backpedaled so quickly...managed to trip and get a fall and roll in there...the instructor claimed he was the only one to 'win' even with movement.

On topic, a practiced sweep of the movement off throwing a safety is a trained and relatively simple motion. Racking the slide takes a lot of coordination. Having talked with a number of people who have been in such situations, fine motor control goes out the window, and I question how much more the complex movements of racking a slide are vs. the sweeping of a safety off on the way to pulling out the firearm.

Its not really that fast and I can't do it while ensuring a round in the ten ring but I can put a round in the COM. Here is a website that will test your reaction time.

    I average between .20 and .22...

    website is too much fun...
my avg is around .2033, high of .23, low of .18
...I think that comes from playing too much Unreal Tournament.
(there's a pretty interesting study on brain surgeons playing that game, but I digress).
Question tho, isn't there something more to reaction with a weapon then reaction in general? ie, the thought processes of the color conditions and ultimately choosing to fire? Also, reaction time vs a good shot? You can't miss fast enough to stop the bad guy, right?
I too have wondered about C&L vs rack-and-bang.
Especially after considering a 1911 as the next toy.

In my opinion, this is why you don't carry without one in the chamber. I don't care how fast you are, I don't care how good you think you are at racking the slide, I don't care how much you practice it, it can happen.

It can't happen with an XD that is carried C&L. Clear leather and bang. Why put something else between "clearing leather" and "bang" that could prevent the gun from firing when you need it most.

Another scenario to think about is if the BG already has the jump on you. You might be able to faint going for your wallet and coming up with a ready firearm, but I'm going to bet he's not going to give you time to rack the slide.

it seems like this one could be checked with a good paintball or airsoft gun and a rubber knife.
